Cloud Nine. That's the experience that Ranbir Kapoor must have been feeling recently. And why not? Super Hit films like AJAB PREM KI GAZAN KAHAANI and RAJNEETI were a bit of the taste, but the real food came that Ranbir got to taste was when he won the Best Actor award at many ceremonies for ROCKSTAR. He even won the Best Actor award at Filmfare, an award show where the Best Actor award is usually given to the 3 greats Amitabh Bacchan, Shah Rukh Khan, or Hritikh Roshan! (Ironically, the three leading men in K3G! Coincidence 😊)
Now, it's time for Ranbir's next film that releases this Friday, BARFI. The film also stars Priyanka Chopra, and is directed by Anurag Basu.
BARFI has been promoted for quite some time now. Of course, it's also common knowledge by now that the lead actor in the film Ranbir Kapoor is mute in the film. Not just Ranbir, but even Priyanka Chopra, who looked so hot in TERI MERI KAHAANI in the new-gen role, has an un-glamarous role in this film. The question is, how will the film fare at the box office?
From the promos and the feel of the film, one can tell right away that this is not a mass-oriented film. This is one of those films that is targeted more towards the audience in cities/metros, and also more towards the class/multiplex audience. Also, given the fact that the main hero in the film is mute, that makes BARFI have even more of a restricted appeal, and only appeal towards a niche audience. Now, this is what will affect the film at the box office. It's clear: BARFI is not a film for the box office!
Of course, the film definitely has potential to score really with the critics. Also, there is a high chance that Ranbir Kapoor will get the Critic's choice award for Best Actor at award ceremonies, including Filmfare. The film may get other critic awards too.
However, as mentioned above, when it comes to the box office, BARFI won't perform too well. It's business will be restricted to doing well at perhaps some high end multiplexes in some cities. Also, one must not forget that there is a possibility of the films' quality not being upto the mark, and here's why: Director Anurag Basu's last directorial venture, KITES, had a disasterous response!
In terms of opening, it will be decent, but not great. I'm not too sure about the budget and the cost of how much the film has been sold at, so I'm not sure how much the film will need to do to earn what status at the box office, but I am guessing here:

Opening Day: 5 crore net
Opening Weekend: 18 crore net
Lifetime: 40 crore net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Below Average
So, what will be the outcomes of this film?
For Ranbir Kapoor, he can be content with the fact that his performance will likely win a lot of praise and may get him some Critic's awards at the award functions.
For Priyanka Chopra, she also has a chance of getting praise/awards, but there's also a chance that she won't. After having the Hit DON 2 and Super Hit AGNEEPATH, things have been going down lately for Priyanka, with TERI MERI KAHAANI proving to be a flop and now BARFI which will not do too well at the box office.
As for Anurag Basu, it remains to be seen if BARFI can get appreciation, atleast from critics, especially after his last film KITES was bashed by a ton of people.
Overall, BARFI may get critical acclaim and appreciation from some, but at the box office it won't be a "sweet" experience for "BARFI"!
