Vishwamitra was also known as Kaushika. Hence the gotra named after him is called Kaushika gotra.

Well after this topic I was interested in this and was talking to my mum. She told me that her gotra is Kaundinya but not mine as my gotra would be from my father, and his is Audchh Sahastra. That can be traced back to Rishi Bhrigu 😛 so our Gotra is Bhargav. But that is not one of the 7 mentioned here so I am super confused now 😕 ... any ideas anyone?

Several gotras also sprung as off shoots from the original 7. For instance, the Parashara gotra is different from the Vashishtha even though Parashara was the grandson of Vashishtha. Such an issue arose b'cos Vashishtha excommunicated Parashara from his family. Hence the descendants of Parashara (which included Veda Vyasa and Shukhadev ) identified themselves as belonging to Parashara Gotra.

In your case, Rishis Bhrigu - Angiras belonged to the Atharvana Vedic sect and were often at loggerheads with the other three Vedic sects. Hence they may not be one of the 'super' seven but their Gotra also flourished.

Incidentally, in the Vedic age, Gotra ( for brahmin boys) was not determined by their father's gotra. After the upanayanam (investiture of the sacred thread / yagnopavita), it was the Guru's (under whom the boy would study for the next 12 years) gotra which the boy would adopt.
