The gotra classification took form probably sometime during the Yajur Veda period, after the Rig Veda period. The present day gotra classification is created from a core of 8 rishis (The Saptha rishis + Agastya). The Seven rishis are Gautama, Bhardwaja, Vishwamitra, Jamadagni, Vasistha, Kashyapa and Atri. Seven Rishis (Saptarshi) are recognized as the mind born sons of the creator Brahma. They desired offspring and received it.

Over the years the number of gotras incresed due to:

Descendents of these Rishis also started new family lineage or new gotras (Kaundinya was a descendent of Vasihta, Vishwamitra was a descendent of Kaushika and Vatsa was a descendent of Jamadagni)

By inter marriage with other Brahmins

Inspired by a saint whose name they bear as their own Gotra.

  • New groups like Kshatriyas (who were also makers of hymns) were taken into fold by some Rishis

These Rishis belonged to different sects like Shakti, Shavites and Vishnavites and had different deities for worship. Such deities came to be known as the Kuladevatas.

Importance of Gotras

The gotra system was instituted for the purposes of identifying one's ancestors and pay respects during various invocations and other rituals to honor their fathers, fore-fathers and so on, up to their respective Rishis. This was later extended to other aspects of the Brahmin life, such as Marriage and temple worship. In present days, marriage will not be allowed within the same gotra in order to avoid impure matrimony. This thinking is in tune with the modern day genetic paradigms of hybrid vigor.

Thank you so much for this... I remembered that my gotra is kaundinya and as it is a difficult name I always forget it... I didn't know he was a decendent of Vashit! I finally know my ancestors now 😆 Thanks a ton

No Myth it is scientifically proved.. The GOTHRA SYSTEM AND THE GENES ARE FOR REAL..
We are all descendents of the sapta rishis.. As mentioned above. the gothra ur family has is the rishi from whom ur in lineage with.
Now coming to the Genetics and Gothra.
We dont get married to a person with the same gothra, because the relationship would be of a Brother and sister and hence any child born would have genetic diffects.
Why do we have so much more increase in diseases and defective offsprings, it is because the gothra factor is not taken care of. If any one is interested I can post a link to an entire article based on this. Please do let me know. 😊

No shruti, they are not from the same community , but yes,, somewhere way way way back there would have been a connection between all those with the same gothra,.

actually both my parents are from the same gotra, but diffrent regions-but they arent exactly related through blood-they are distantly related through marriage!,infact in my family we have had lots of close relation marriages...ofcourse the effects of those close marriages have an effect till date
its very common here to have marriages in close relations-aleast it used to be at the time of my parents and grand parents-right now the practice is more or less redundant
but however in the places like Haryana they take the Gotra system VERY seriously...marrying within the Gotra isnt allowed, honour killings take place even if the couple is from the same Gotra

Shruti I am an Iyer from kerala, we also follow the Gotra system religiously.. First question asked when hunting down a bride is to ask for the Gotra of Gotram as we call it.
