Part 5

Arnav settled into his black CEO chair, took a sip of his coffee and opened the file containing the report he had asked Khushi to write and began to read. He picked up his red correction pen. He was quite sure that he would be needing its services extensively today.

Wrong. She had actually pulled it off. And quite well at that. Save for a few minor corrections, the report was almost perfect. Khushi Kumari Gupta had done it again for the second time in one day. Surprised him.

Arnav leaned back and his glance wandered in her direction. His mind wandered back to their online conversation... I couldn't take time off work to speak with you and I have commitments here that my boss needs me to attend to and I can't disappoint him either. The angel whispered, 'you make her life hell on a daily basis. You scream and shout at her, you put her in difficult...no...deadly situations and yet here she trying not to disappoint you.' The little devil pipped up instantaneously, 'mehhh cry me a river. She did her job. Big freaking deal, isn't that why we pay her. In any case, how can we even be sure that she wrote the report herself? I mean look at her, she's a total dag, uneducated, can't speak English properly.' The devil won, he had successfully roused the Tycoon's suspicious side.

'KHHHUUUSSSHHHIII'

Khushi was still on cloud nine after her conversation with The Mentor, no RR-Ji, and she came spiralling back to the present, landing with a thud when she heard his voice. Devi Maiya. That report. She worked on it all night. Had she messed it up?

She ran.

'Yes Arnav-ji' she said hesitantly.

He was looking at her suspiciously. His eyes narrowed.

'Khushi did you write this report?'

'Yes Arnaav-ji'

'How did you get it done so quickly?'

'Arnav-ji I was here late last night so I was here when you sent the email. So I worked through the night to write this report. Is something wrong Arnav-Ji?' her words can tumbling out as she raced with her explanation at a million miles per hour.

'What were you doing here at that hour of the night?'

EEEkkk... Now what? Should she tell him that she had a business mentor and that he was going to help her start her business. But that meant that he would know that she was going to leave AR Corporation. Devi Maiya...help?!

Would she reveal the reason or was it going to be a lie. The little devil whispered in his ear 'of course she's going to lie - all girls lie!' The Angel responded 'Come on Arnav, she didn't lie to you before, why would she lie now..?' Arnav waited to hear her explanation.

Khushi took a deep breath.

'Arnav-ji, I was using the computer here. I don't have a computer to do what I needed to do at home. I promise I wasn't doing anything wrong.'

Khushi knew she was babbling. A red flush began to appear on her milky white skin and travelled at lightning speed up her neck, across her cheeks. This wasn't working. She shut her eyes. Really tight.

There she goes again, pretending that problem didn't exist thought Arnav. Tough Khushi. I am real and just because you close your eye doesn't mean I don't exist. Get used to it.

'Khushi, I don't have all day - spit it out or else I'll get the security footage out!'

'Ok, ok. The Business Development Association is running a program for people who want to start their own business and I entered my application for the program and got in, so they've given me a mentor to teach me know to be a business person.'

She slowly opened her eyes. He was staring at her. And then he stood up.

You've got guts Khushi Kumari Gupta. I'll give you that. Time and time again I was certain that you would lie to me. But you didn't.

Arnav was impressed. But could she withstand the pressure.

'You are aware that it's against company policy to use the computers here for private purposes. You are also aware of the penalty if that policy is broken are you not?'

Khushi was nervous now. She knew the answer to his question and also knew she couldn't afford the punishment. Instant dismissal without pay. Arnav Singh Raizaida ran a very tight ship and didn't tolerate misdemeanours. She took another deep breath.

Arnav could see that she was very afraid. Go on, urged the devil, don't stop...

He walked around his desk to where she stood. He stopped right in front of her, drew himself to his full height of 6 feet and folded his arms across his broad chest. He knew full well how intimidating he looked.

His tone dropped down to a notch above a whisper.

'Well Khushi, I don't have all day...'

Khushi winced. She was actually afraid. Rakshas Raizada was going to fire her. She knew it.

'I know the penalty Arnav-ji'.

'In that case, Khu...' Arnav stopped mid-sentence as his phone rang. He looked at the display and groaned inwards. He had to take this call. It was one of his major international partners.

Khushi had never been so glad to hear the annoying ring of his mobile. As he turned to pick up the phone, she made a dash for the door.

The little devil groaned. The angel cheered.
