Amazing episode. I am an aspiring health student and I don't even know what to say. You know we all know that such things happen but we don't even realize to what extent and how much it affects us as being part of this society. When someone is being a doctor, their main intention should be to treat the patient and get them to be as healthy as possible...not make them more sick till they die.
After watching this episode, I somewhere feel ashamed to be wanting to be part of this group of professions. It is so corrupted that even people with good heart begin going into wrong directions like Dr. Pichad. That's because in this profession, you need so much of contact and networking that it somehow becomes impossible to run away from such people. I really salute Dr. Pichad from breaking out from this chain and following the path of humanity👏 Same goes with Dr.Gulati, Dr.Shetty and Dr.Sharma and all the other doctors who are not corrupted.
You know 2 years back I did a presentation on Medical Tourism in India for one of my class...and while researching, I learnt that gov't spends more money on Medical Tourism (of private hospitals, btw) to build the infrastructure than on public hospitals of our country. That is what I call a shame. Ofcourse, I am not against Medical Tourism but it should not happen on cost of our citizen's healthcare.
Getting commission from other doctors and other professions like Pharm.D...it's such a shame. It is such a shame that none of these doctors have received any sort of punishment and I don't even know when that will happen. Why is MCI and the govt. of our nation sitting quietly and letting this happen? I hope it changes soon.
And I hope that all the aspiring doctors, pharmacists, nurses were watching today's episode and vowed to be an honest and ethical health professional because this was a fantastic episode. I loved how it touched me emotionally as well as made me think logically and ethically.
Coming to your point on being incompetent and competent. I agree that their incompetence might be the reason why there is so much of malpractice. These days there are so many kids whose parents force them to go in some health field...especially in India and China. And that would be one of the reason why these kids who pass and become doctors. But they are not interested in this field that they don't have much interest in knowing what they are doing...and THAT is wrong. And who knows, these kids could be the same doctors performing such malpractices. Oh there are so many reasons why such malpractices could occur.
But I also want to point out that in medical field there are many mistakes that takes place too and you cannot always blame the doctors for that. I am not sure but I might be one too...and I might happen to make a mistake in my judgement because we're humans. But that is why a patient should always consult 2-3 doctors...and not ask those doctors to refer them to other doctors...because let's face it, they would only refer to their fellow doctors only (and they could be corrupted too, like it happened with one of the audience's father with his liver transplant). What I am trying to say is that all doctors have different ways of treating a patient and both ways might be right...a doctor's duty is to explain his/her patient his procedure clearly...including pros and cons...and a patient's duty is to understand that, and consult two-three other doctors to make sure if that could be or might be the best procedure. And if all three say different things, then cross-check them. Don't let doctors make your decisions. Doctors should tell their patient about the possibilities...and their respective pros-cons and that's all.
