Happily Ever After
'It will be a boy.' Abhay said confidently.
'Girl.' Phulwa replied calmly sitting on the bed while munching on an apple.
'I said na boy? So it will be a boy.'
'No, no girl!' She said not ready to give up.
Ever since Abhay had gotten the news of the baby he had not been able to keep the smile off his face. Not only him but everyone in the house had been over the moon hearing the joyous news. Abhay had already decorated a new room as baby's nursery. Whites and lemons dominated the color scheme in the room as they had not confirmed the gender of the baby; they wanted to keep it a surprise.
But not surprisingly Abhay wanted a son whom he could raise up to be a brave police officer like him while Phulwa wanted a beautiful daughter whom she would raise to be confident and fearless, and work alongside men. While deciding the name of the baby they argued over it.
'But why do you want a son? Girls are more precious'
'Yes that's why I want her to have an elder brother who can protect her.'
'Why would she need protection and from whom? My daughter will be brave enough to take care of herself.'
'Protection is needed. Aaj kal ka zaamana bahut kharab hai. If anyone guy ever dares to come near my daughter I'll break his legs and my son will make sure he lands in jail.'
'Lo baap aur beta dono ek jaise. No! My son won't be doing any such thing and neither will be you because my I will raise my daughter competent enough to handle such situations.' She said that gently touching her bulging tummy and then winced in pain.
'What happened?'
'The baby just kicked.'
'See! That's my boy.' Abhay said proudly grinning.
'Definitely yours.' She said smiling at his excitement. accolade

A loud scream rang through the corridors of the hospital. Abhay winced slightly as the high pitch scream almost damaged his ear drums.
'Phulwa please.' He said in a soothing voice trying to calm a hyper Phulwa who was screaming her head off in pain in the labor room.
'Shut up Abhay!' She shouted at him her face twisted in anger.
Abhay gulped never have seen this side of Phulwa before. He tried to step behind a little scared at what might happen next. Nurses and doctor rushed around as Mrs. Abhay Rai Singh gave birth to their first child. The pregnancy had gone smoothly but there were a few complications in the labor and Phulwa lay writhing in pain. The doctor tried her best to calm her down.
'Push!' the doctor ordered. It was followed by a shrill scream.
The doctor looked up worried, even Phulwa looked surprised as they all turned to see the source of the noise; Abhay. He was standing next to Phulwa his face depicting the pain as he managed to said, 'Phulwa...my hand.'
She looked down to see the hand she was holding onto was Abhays, her grip so tight that her knuckles had gone white and so had Abhays face.
'You should go out I think.' Nurse Shivani said to Abhay. He looked at her grateful and decided to leave when he was pulled back by a strong force.
'Don't. You. Dare.' She hissed near his face. Scared at her fierce gaze he only did as told and kept still in the place.
A few minutes later Phulwa wrenched in pain, her piercing screams continued to fill the room but soon they were followed by a large thud sound. Everyone stopped stunned, even Phulwa opened her eyes worried and then she saw why everyone had stopped. There on the floor laid Abhay knocked out.

'Abhay sir, congratulations. It's a baby boy.' The nurse said smiling at him. 'You can now go inside to meet them.'
Abhay slowly opened the door and stepped into the room. Stark white walls greeted him but in it a bundle of life and joy, encompassing all the colors of the world, wrapped in a blue blanket lied quietly in the arms of the most beautiful woman.

Phulwa sat there looking radiant holding the tiny fortune in her arms. She seemed oblivious to the surrounding, didn't even look up when Abhay entered as her whole attention was focused on him; their son. She was nervous when she first held him but then the minute she did she felt as if the whole universe was placed in her arms. It was an odd feeling unexplainable at the best. The warmth his little presence filled her with; she had never felt so happy, so complete.
She couldn't believe it was her own baby that she could give birth to this precious little thing. Tenderly she touched his face, held his hand as his tiny fingers wrapped around her own. His eyes shut closed, his stubby nose, soft mouth, wisps of dark hair on his head- he looked like an angel. She leaned in closer his breath so pure, the untainted innocence, life in its purest form. She smiled down at the little miracle with moist eyes.
He came close to the bed and just stood there observing the little one. She looked up at him expectantly and held out the baby for Abhay to hold. His hands came forward with eagerness but he looked a bit apprehensive. But as he held the baby his expressions changed and a soft smile spread on his face. He sat down next to her on the bed. The baby stirred a little, opening his little eyes. Abhays face lit up as he saw it.
'Phulwa...look my baby is smiling at me. Mera beta.'
'Our son.' Phulwa said amused at Abhays excitement but she admired it too. She noticed tears welling up in his eyes.
'Abhay...' She asked in a concerned voice.
But Abhays whole attention was on the little life he was holding. She understood how he must be feeling. His apprehensive, his nervousness was well placed. He was concerned that will he prove to be a good father? A man who himself was deprived of fathers love his whole life, and when he finally got the chance to bask in the warmth of it that love turned out to be only a pretence. A man who had never shared any true relations before, will such a man prove to be a good father? Will he be able to provide all the love, care and understanding that a child deserves? Yes, he will she thought to herself.
Now seeing him hold the baby so lovingly in his arms she knew all his fears were baseless, that he will prove to be the best father and he knew it too as he tenderly kissed the top of his head.
'I would give you all the happiness and love in the world.' He promised.
Phulwa lightly touched his arm and he carefully placed the baby back into her arms. Sitting now next to her he placed a protective arm around her and the other under her hand which held the baby. She smiled up at him as he gazed at her affectionately. Sighing happily she placed her head on his chest as he held onto her and they both held the baby together.

'Anything else ma'ma?' The young woman asked Phulwa.
'No, that will be all.' She replied sitting on her table in the study room in the haveli.
She had been working on the new campaign that was soon to be started for the new elections to be held later that year. Ever since she had been able to read and write she had started to take part in different social movements and had been generally active on the social front. Soon the political leaders of that area had noticed her presence and seen the affect her words and actions made on people. It was no surprise that she was asked to be the part of this year's election. Initially she had refused but with Abhays support she had decided to be a part of it. You had always wanted to make a difference, help people and what better medium than this to reach out to thousands of people, Abhay words still rang in her head and had encouraged her to take this step. She was deep into studying the file when a large crashing sound broke her concentration.
'Aditiya.' She said shaking her head.
Almost more than two years had passed since the birth of their first child and to say he was a restless soul was an understatement. Aditiya just like his parents was always up with something never sitting down calmly even for a moment. Even right now he had broken a beautiful vase while jumping down from the table.
Pushing back the chair, she carefully got up she went out in the lounge and was not shocked to see the mess created. She simply sighed and called Aditiya. But got no answer then she saw a chubby little hand holding the back of the sofa and soft giggles coming from behind. Leaning out he peeked at her. His dark hair falling on his forehead, his innocent eyes twinkling with mischief like his father, he gave a little laugh and not waiting to hear his mother out ran to the main door. Phulwa tried to stop him but before she could reach him Aditiya jumped into the strong arms of the man entering.
'Abhay, good you are here. Now handle him because I can't control him.'
'Sure you can. You very well control me.' He said with a wink.
'Abhay!' She said giving him the zip-it-or-else look.
Laughing he asked Aditiya what he did now and the toddler replied in broken words that he was just playing. Then he saw the mess in the hall and gave Aditiya a high five. Seeing this Phulwa was even more angered and reprimanded them both. Abhay and Aditiya both looked at Phulwa with their innocent eyes and lower lip slightly pouting but Phulwa didn't budge. Seeing that Abhay whispered something in Aditiya's ear and he jumped down from his lap and ran to Phulwa and hugged her around knees. Phulwa looked down as Aditiya in a little voice said 'Sorry mama.'
Phulwa instantly melting picked him up and hugged him tightly. But then looking at Abhay pointedly she said, 'You are not off the hook.'
With a slightly annoyed look she went to sit on the sofa. Abhay sat next to her and asked 'So what do I have to do to make up for it?'
'Stop spoiling him for starters.' She said.
'Come on Phulwa it's his age to get spoiled; like I haven't spoiled you enough.' He said with a soft chuckle. She glared at him as a warning.
'He is just training to be a great police officer like me. Just wait, soon he will be taking my position. ACP Aditiya Rai Singh. Right boy?' He asked beaming at him and the toddler gave the best salute he could manage with his tiny hands.
'Really Abhay, leave the task of bringing up the kids to me. If it were in your hands you would have send him to academy right now.'
'Hey! I'm just being helpful you know. Besides you will have plenty to handle in a few more months.' He said tenderly touching her growing tummy.
'Yes, I can see how helpful you are being. Okay then take him,' she said handing Aditiya over to Abhay. 'And give a nice bath, then feed him and get him ready for bed. Okay?'
He looked horrified for a moment as Phulwa started to laugh.
'Fine, I'll help. I know you can't do anything without my help.'
'Yes, I can't. You are my better half.' He said wrapping his arm around both. Aditiya put his arms around their necks tightly and they started to laugh. They smiled holding onto each other, their family just like they had promised to.

Few months later they were bestowed with a beautiful baby girl whom they lovingly named Pehr and whom Abhay spoiled even more. They both continued to bring a change in the world; though on a small level but they believed one day these small efforts will make a larger impact. Together they overcame every obstacle that life presented, finding a path to walk together, fulfilling all the vows they had made.
