Arpita's Mother
So I still maintain that this woman is still mentally disturbed from the loss of her daughter but she is not a cruel woman unlike the Dubeys. But what I found most interesting about this scene was the information we got about Arpita's character, that she spoke the truth no matter the consequences, with a pure and unbridled heart. This gave the clue that perhaps all was not well with her as the bahu of the Scindia family because either she opposed her in-laws or she fought a lot of frustration living with them. This tallies with the Arpita we saw in the first ever flashback, who questioned Yash as to why he wanted to marry her just by seeing her picture. This makes a lot of sense because it is her mother talking about her. So it is possible that Arpita, while happy with Yash kept a lot of things within herself to fit into the Scindia bahu mould.
The Scindias hated their own game being played on them! Previously they used Garima's blackmail for their own benefit, to keep Aarti and the Dubeys under tabs and nobody understands the politics better than Scindia saab. Arpita's mother is a quivering mass of fragile emotion and the Scindias were taking advantage of that. By taking Aarti to meet and speak to her, Shobha made her own use of Garima's emotions but in a much subtler and much more sincere way. Gayatri is clearly not as shrewd as her husband. He backs off and retreats from the battlefield to strategise and regroup while she forges on even when she is losing a battle. These sour grapes toward Aarti are going to be problem later though.
Yash and his kids
Is it weird that Yash is most comfortable with his kids when they are asleep? 😆 But I guess this is also one of the rare times he gets to have them all to himself and just look at them, stroke their heads, do all the affectionate things he is never allowed to do in the company of his parents and family because he is a man. I love his unwavering attention to them as though he could stare at them forever and never be bored, looking out for their every movement, every stillness. This man just has so much love to give and is almost weighed down by his own capacity to love. Does that sound corny? But I can't think of any other way to say it!
Aw and that kiss to his hand after Payal wakes up coughing almost sent me over the edge. I feel like both girls feel so protected and loved and that is exactly what Yash wants!
Yash and Arpita flashback
So I have been wondering to myself, to the CVs of the show intend these to be flashbacks, as in showing us the past first hand, or are they memories, ie us seeing the past through Yash and Aarti's eyes. I am tending to think the latter because of the black and white and the choice splashes of colour. Today the symbolism in the memory was really interesting as well as the characterisation and some of the hints that were given so forgive me if I end up writing an essay about this.
First of all we see here that Arpita was in green. I said before that I think the colours of the spouses in the memories reflect the rememberers state of mind. Here Yash is calm and peaceful with his daughters and so that is reflected in Arpita's green. In some ways he is also feeling what they call vatsalya in Sanskrit, or parental love so this is reflected in the colour Arpi is wearing. She is shown as the mother for the first time and Yash is fascinated by this aspect of her. I love that they showed this. Their relationship was not only about romance but a deep and abiding love, where Yash loved every aspect of Arpita's being, as just a girl in a photograph, her as his wife, as a mother, and basically as a woman (ring any bells from yesterday?).
I thought it was interesting that here Yash too was in colour, that is only his clothes. I think it is because this memory carried on to the present with the promise that had to be kept. All the other memories were decidedly in the past but this one intrudes on the present which is why Yash is also in colour.
Now the highlight of this scene was when Arpita was explaining motherhood and said how ordinary and extraordinary an experience it was and Yash lamented the fact that only women could feel this. To me that was just beautiful! Here is a man whose capacity to love is not restricted to the definitions assigned to him of man and father. He wants to love and he does love with the stereotypical depth of a woman and a mother (thinking back to when Scindia told him it was inappropriate to grieve for Arpita the way he was doing) but his family holds him back from expressing this love to the extent that he wants to. I think Arpita was the only being to whom he could show this sensitive and deeply emotional side without judgment and that is what made her so important to him and why he feels she is irreplaceable. With every one else he guards his emotions but with her he could say what to anyone else would sound absurd and she loved him all the more for it!
I have to give a standing ovation to whoever wrote this because I think a lot of the time we undermine a man's capacity and willingness to love openly and emotionally. Women are not the only ones that suffer from gender stereotypes and I am so glad they are touching on this in such a touching and sensitive manner. 👏👏👏
Finally, I get the feeling that Arpita somehow knew there was a chance of her dying early. They both seemed to emotional for it to be just an offhand conversation and I know these things are exaggerated in serials but the fact that Yash took her so seriously, broke down himself and found it in him to promise her made me feel that there was more than meets the eye. He was so hesitant to promise her, not because he thought his love would diminish but because that would be acknowledging the possibility that she may not be there one day. Arpita looked so happy and so peaceful when he did promise her that I felt like this had been playing on her mind for a while. And finally what sealed the deal was that Yash shouted out to Arpita when Payal coughed and only then realised he had been but lost in his memories. Could the reaction to the cough mean something?
Yash and Prateek Conversation
Prateek is wondrous! I simply adore this character who plays the family clown but in truth is mature beyond anyone's perception. Even though Yash is unwilling to tell him the problem, he doesn't let go and makes it his business to get it out of him. I feel like Yash sort of underestimates Prateek because he is "chote" and nobody takes him very seriously. He doesn't immediately grasp that this is someone he can reveal his emotions to without fear, given that Prateek himself is a guy so in touch with his feminine side and so secure about it to boot!
Finally when Yash does open up, it is to wonder if he is breaking his promise to Arpita. That Scindia calculativeness seems to be overtaking him and he is afraid that his love will reduce just because Aarti is there to take care of the kids. What bothered me a little is how he didn't really put Ansh in the picture at all. This is what I loved about Prateek who brought him in seamlessly. I feel like Prateek will be helping Aarti and Ansh a lot when Yash falls short because of his awkwardness. Prateek understands just what Yash needs to hear and what he wants to be said but sometimes can't say himself. I love this relationship between these two where Prateek is secure enough not to let Yash's looks and indifference hurt him and forges ahead!
Aarti and Mansi
Oh how I wish they had been more careful about Mansi's character because I absolutely loved her today. I wish they hadn't made her a broken record in the second week and made us all resent her because she is a really interesting character. I loved the insight we got into her today as well! She is joking about her husband but clearly it is a defense mechanism hiding a lot of pain. But she also has some misconceptions about love, that it can't happen long distance. This is probably because of her preoccupation with the physical aspect of it. I hope her marriage teaches her the other ways to love as well and I was happy to see her husband call finally!
And the lingerie and Aarti's reaction to it was hilarious! 🤣 This is what I love seeing in Mansi's character and her relationship with Aarti and I loved that they are so different but they do know each other inside out and love each other to pieces. I hope one day we get more on how they met and became friends. MaRti flashbacks! 😍
Aarti and Prashant
This was the big zinger today, huh? Prashant is such a slimy coward. He knew that nobody he spoke to, neither Shobha nor Mansi would let him speak to Aarti and so he kept calling. Like there weren't enough creepy things going on! She is clearly knocked out of her senses on hearing his voice and I feel like she agrees to meet him because she has been thinking so much about him lately with this PV happening. But I am sure she will be in for some rude shock when she meets him. He can have no good intentions or he would have waited to meet her after her marriage.
Precap
You tell her Shobha! I understand Aarti's desperation but she should really consider the consequences of her action. Shobha's anger is totally justified. Does she think this wedding is a joke? Sadly, she wishes it was!
