Oh, and one more thing. The really disgusting and sinful act of female infanticide is not a part of true Indian culture. Believe me, hearing stories of the horrible crimes against female babies makes my blood boil and want to torture those evil-minded parents myself, but that practice only came up since the last few generations.

If you look at history, India had very high respect for women back in the ancient days. We have queens like Rani Laxmibai fighting in wars and defending her motherland, and no one considered it inappropriate then. In Hindu scriptures, we have characters like Sita and Draupadi who are renown for their strength and patience. Sita's father, Maharaj Janak, had two daughters and no sons, but not once did he regret that fact. He brought up Sita and Urmila with as much love and affection as he would have sons, and this shows us that parents in the ancient times had great respect for women and recognized their importance to society.
Only recently has India become so male-dominated that they've been aborting female children, but you will see that they ARE suffering the consequences for it. India has far more boys nowadays than girls, and this is all because of sex selective abortions. India is now recognizing how dangerous of a situation has arised because of people's prejudice against women, and it is making them realize that without women, the human race cannot continue! Yes, the truly intelligent person would have realized that long ago, but some people stupid and clearly never took this into consideration.
As for people making comments like "Oh well, there is always next time" when girls are born, there will always be people like them in the world but we should ignore them and continue to give birth to girls proudly because we are aiding in the continuation of the human race. I personally would protest against such prejudiced comments if anyone said them to me, and I think that today, many are more educated today than they used to be and sex selective abortion has decreased. People have gradually realized the importance of women for society and such comments are also less, but narrow-minded people do exist and they will continue to exist, what can we do about it?

I hope no one is offended about my remarks about India, but the soaps do not project a very progressive side, particularly towards the way women are treated

i totally agree with u..in idian soaps either cvs will show women as super women, or like garbage.. if once they grt divorce .they r not allow to attend any festival, family gather occasion? they become unlucky..what a crap..but all the men can do every thing..who cares? doosri dulhan lene mai koi fikar nahin...such a back minded thinking still indian tele industry r following in their soaps ..really feel very pity on them and their ideas... sorry guys if i break someone's mind this is only my pov as woman...
