I think she stated her reason for staying in that house clearly - she'll be able to live a more liberal life here - a life where she atleast has a chance to make something out of herself, as opposed to the life in her village with her parents.
As for her not allowing Uttara to make a decision, I think the entire family is against this, it's not just Vidya. So why single Vidya out? Priya tried the samething Vidya tried, and Devyani succeeded in. Granted, Devyani's opinion will carry more weight given that it was she that Uttara was trying to spare, but still, all the other 3 females felt the same way.
I don't find Vidya irritating at all - she's consistently shown as a simple minded, loving loyally and unquestioningly those who are related to her, and she forgives extremely easily.
Someone said she brought forth Aditya's folly when she herself has defended those who've done worse. Well, to put things in perspective - she defended her husband AFTER she left him, and decided to live her own life. She defended him AFTER she was asked to come back for a divorce. She defended him AFTER she realized that he realized his mistake and was genuinely sorry. But mostly, she defended him AFTER she fell in love with him.
Also, she didn't blame Aditya out of the blue - she said herself that it was in the context of Aditya judging someone else harshly. I thought she was very right in bringing Aditya's choices up - no one in that house has the right to point any finger at anyone, except maybe Jaggi and Imli. They've all either committed, been part of, or have silently watched grave sins happen. But they've all come out of it strong and have learned their lessons. So no one should judge anyone harshly there. And THAT is what she was trying to tell Aditya.
As for her taking Uttara's side - she's just being a sympathetic and supporting family member. Something Priya would be doing, and Devyani would be doing, if they were around. I felt she was doing the right thing.
Uttara is free to make her choice, just as Vidya is free to give her advice and try to convince Uttara.
I would've done the same - not because I feel that Uttara should or shouldn't keep the baby - but because I know Uttara is making a decision in haste, out of anger and desperation, and mostly not with a sound mind. As Priya said - she needs to sit down, and think about this with a cool mind.
On a separate but curious note - why did the doctor say she was against it? I live in the US and have been here for the most part so I don't know what the rules are about abortion in the rest of the world. I'm just curious to know if it's considered illegal in other parts? Or does it require both the parties consent?
