'SURPRISE!' Nilesh, Amar, Rinni, Bharat, Vishaka and Sharon shouted leaping up from behind the sofas and grinning broadly.

For a moment Neha was too shocked to say anything. She just looked from one face to the other and finally she turned to Kriya standing next to her.
'What?' Shock, confusion and above all anger was evident on her face.
'Err, Sur...surprise!' Kriya said nervously and gave Neha a bright smile but the look which Neha gave in return was enough to make her stop smiling.
'Kaisa surprise? Vicky kahan hai?'
'Vicky... exactly! Vicky! Ussne hi toh yeh sab plan kiya hai.' Sharon said quickly.
'Plan? Kya plan?'
'Your surprise birthday party! Vicky planned it all!' said Vishaka.
'Mera birthday? Jo last week tha? Jo hum celebrate kar chuke hain?' Neha asked in disbelief.
'Aye hello, last week's party was so cool, totally my style...it was to celebrate my birthday, not yours.' Nilesh said, full-on attitude ke saath.
Neha crossed her arms and glared at him. She was giving him 'the look'.
Nilesh knew that look. They all knew that look. It meant danger. Uh-oh.
'Mujhse yeh bolkar ki Vicky ka accident ho gaya hai, ghar mein sabse yeh bolkar ki Vishaka ki bua ka death ho gaya, tum mujhe yahan surprise party dene ke liye lekar aaye ho??? Woh bhi mere birthday ke ek hafte baad??? Tumhe pata hai how worried Neha was Vicky ke liye???' Neha was shouting at them by now.
Her friends looked at each other a little scared, but mostly confused by her reaction. They hadn't thought she would be this angry. One by one they all looked at Kriya with pleading looks. After Vicky, Kriya was the only one who could really calm her down.
Kriya stepped towards Neha and placed her hand on Neha's shoulder cautiously, as if scared that Neha was going to suddenly burst like a bomb or something. She took it as a good sign that Neha dint jerk away from her and said 'Ssshhh, Neha shaant ho jaao. Vicky loves you so much, he just wanted to plan something special for you. And you know if he had thrown a surprise party on your birthday you wouldn't be surprised at all because you were expecting a surprise party weren't you? And we had to lie to you and your parents because the party had to be today you know, since it's your 3rd anniversary.'
Neha gasped.
'Kya? 3rd anniversary? Arre haan, main toh bhool...' and she broke off looking guilty.
All her friends stared at her in shock. Neha never forgot birthdays and anniversaries.
'Ohhh, so that's why this place...' she had just realized the significance of the venue for her 'surprise birthday party'.
'Dude, tum bhool kaise sakti ho? Do you know Vicky iss party ko lekar kitna excited hai?' Vishaka said, trying to make Neha feel even more guilty.
The others joined in and soon Neha couldn't stand it any more.
'Main pareshaan thi! Ghar pe...' she stopped and took a deep breath.
'Accha bataao, where Vicky is? Party ussne plan ki hai na? Toh woh kahan hai?'
Feeling relieved at having calmed her down finally, her friends smiled at each other.
'Woh tumhaare liye aur ek surprise hai! Vicky has bought you a gift. A dress! And you know what, he went shopping and selected it all by himself, no help from us!' Sharon said excitedly.
'Vicky ne select kiya hai?' Neha asked looking worried.
'Arre don't worry, humne dekha hai, bohut accha hai.' Kriya assured her.
'And Vicky has told that he'll come in front of you, only after you wear the salwar suit! So go fast and wear it! We'll be right here.' Rinni said and she winked at Sharon who glared back at her.
Neha looked confused at her friend's behavior.
'Please bataao na, kahan hai Vicky? Mujhe bohut important baat karni hai.' she looked at Kriya asking for help but Kriya just shrugged and said 'Vicky ki party, Vicky ke rules. Anyways, even we don't know where he's hiding.'
'Ok fine.' Neha said defeatedly and Kriya took her hand and led her to the room while the others high fived each other.
Kriya left her in the room and joined the others outside. They grinned at each other. Now the fun starts.
Neha looked at the salwar suit in astonishment. It was light pink and white and beautified with sequins and thread work. She could hardly believe Vicky had bought it on his own. He had also bought matching earrings and bangles.
The thought of Vicky in a shop buying all this made her laugh.
'Paagal hai...mera deewana. Aur main uski deewani. Isse hi kehte hain, madly in love!'
It was impossible to even try to imagine her life without him. She couldn't remember a time when he wasn't there for her.
And now...
She sighed and began getting dressed.
'Accha hi hai jo main yahan aa gayi. Jo Neha ko kehna hai, woh face-to-face hi better hai. Phone pe main bol bhi nahin paati.'
Once she was dressed, she stood in front of the mirror examining herself. She looked good she thought... except for the sad look on her face. She tried to smile but failed. Again she sighed and closing here eyes, she leaned her forehead against the cold mirror. She needed to tell him. It felt like a burden and she could not feel better until she had told him everything.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped outside. It was silent. She was puzzled. Now that she thought about it, she hadn't seen any decorations put up and there wasn't any sign of a cake. She guessed that they'd be celebrating outside and walked through the narrow corridor towards the hall.
The hall was empty. Her friends were gone.
