the update was awesome blossom. Mindblowing. Loved it and the mystery you created is superb.
'Vicky…Kriya? Maine dress pehenli hai…Kahan ho tum sab?'
Neha looked around the living room, getting more and more confused by the second. Finally her eyes landed on a rectangular box wrapped in sparkly, shiny red paper and tied with white ribbons kept on the table at the center of the hall. A single red rose was placed on top of it.
Another gift? Well, they were celebrating her birthday so it must be for her. She went towards it and then she noticed the piece of paper peeking from under the gift. She took the paper. 'Neha, you look beautiful. First, open the gift. Then follow the trail to find me. You know where I am, but there's only one way to get there. Love, Vicky.' She smiled as she read the sweet message.
You know where I am…What did he mean? She had to think for some time but the answer finally came to her mind. Of course! The pool area.
And she also remembered the different paths to get there… but he had written there was only one way, which meant that the other paths must've been blocked off... and so she had to follow a trail set by him.
'But, what trail?' she wondered then decided to open the gift first and then look for the 'trail'.
Keeping the rose aside she picked up the gift and began to unwrap it. Inside was an ornately carved wooden box. She remembered it well- it belonged to Vicky's mother. As kids, though Vicky, Nilesh and Neha did not spend much time playing inside in their houses, they'd been forced to do so on rainy days and one such day Vicky's mother had left the box on the dining table by mistake and Neha had seen it and admired it greatly.
She had totally forgotten about it after that. Evidently, Vicky hadn't.
She flipped open the latch and lifted the lid. Inside was a dry leaf with something written on it. Vicky had written a message for her, Mohabbatein-style! Carefully, she took the leaf out and read-
'Yeh raat, yeh chaandni phir kahaan…
Sun jaa dil ki daastaan.'
It was one of her favorite songs, but she couldn't figure out why he had written it on the leaf. Unless… unless he meant it literally. She looked inside the box again. Yes, there was a neatly folded piece of paper- a letter! Beneath the letter was a photo taken on one of their school events in which Nilesh, Neha and Vicky had performed a dance together for the first time. Neha couldn't help but laugh at the picture. Neha had dressed up as Basanti, Nilesh as Gabbar and Vicky as Thakur. It had been Neha's mother's idea and everyone had loved their act.
The last item in the box was a pink rubber band with a cute butterfly. Neha smiled looking at it. She had loved these kinds of rubber bands and hair clips. Vicky had loved pulling them out of her hair and making Neha chase him to get her rubber band back. He hadn't got rid of the habit yet. Even now, if Neha ever tied her hair back, Vicky would pull out the rubber band. She dint really remember this particular one, but she was pretty sure it was hers.
She opened the letter, very curious as to what might be written inside.
'Meri Deewani,
Our first dance together… the Sholay act… when we were performing together on the stage, with so many people cheering us on… it's one of my happiest memories, not just because it was my first performance but also because you were a part of it. It wouldn't have been as special as it is without you.
And my childhood wouldn't have been so much of fun if not for you and Nilesh. I know you used to get annoyed all those times when I stole your rubber bands but I wasn't really trying to annoy you. Okay, maybe I was, a little… but honestly, I just love it when you leave your hair free.
Do you remember this box? You liked it a lot, dint you? I asked Ma to give it to me almost 2 years back. Ever since then I was waiting for some special occasion to gift it to you… today is that special day.
Love, Vicky.'
A warm feeling spread all through her as she read the letter. It made her forget about everything else and all she could think of was that she wanted to find Vicky and tell him just how much she loved him for everything he had done.
But where was he? A trail… she had to find a trail.
Neha placed everything back inside the box and closed it and leaving it on the table, went to the front door but it had been locked from the outside. She looked around the room again trying to remember the different ways out of the villa. There was one exit from the kitchen, but she found it locked.
Finally she went to a room in the back of the Villa. The room had a door that opened up to a path leading to the pool area. She had really hoped this wasn't the path she would have to take because it was a path surrounded by trees on both the sides and it was already dark now. She supposed the outdoor lights would've been switched on by now but the thought still made her nervous.
She opened the room. The lights had been left switched on. The door across the room was left ajar. Trying to make herself believe that no one was going to jump on her and attack her, she crossed the room and pushed open the door.
She needn't have been afraid. Diya's had been placed on the steps leading down to the path. Fairy lights had been strung across the trees and star lanterns were hung. It was like Christmas and Deewali combined!
And now she understood what exactly he meant by the 'trail'. The path had been completely covered with rose petals. A trail of roses!
It was a beautiful sight. For a minute she just stood there, taking it all in. The time, the patience, the hard work, the money he must've put into doing this!
She started to climb down the steps when she saw another gift box placed at the end of the last step.
