It is raining Bollywood stars at Cannes but as usual their decision to wear western dress at prestigious film fest is being subjected to alot of criticism. While Preity Zinta was clad in a black cocktail dress and Aishwarya Rai went for a black Armani gown and a midnight blue Roberto Cavalli dress. According to media reports, fashion commentator Shobhaa De said, "It is disaster, disaster, disaster. When India is the international flavour, why are our girls dressing like Marys off to church? Even if it is fusion wear, they should be showcasing our brilliant crafts. Instead, they are looking like Hispanic nobodies- Penelope Cruz's handmaidens, Salma Hayek's dressers. Bollywood actresses should wear India with pride. If these women feel like behenjis in traditional Kanjeevarams, they can get themselves sexy saris. Especially at Cannes, people would understand. Why these dreadful dresses?" Shobhaa was quoted saying by a newspaper that Indian women don't have the bodies to carry Western clothes. "We don't know how to stand in these frocks. Look at Preity. Her legs are going all over, her body language is all wrong. We are not used to Western clothes. Our legs let us down." According to most of the Indian designers, Indian outfits are held in great awe among the westerners and our film stars should have represented that. Designer Manish Malhotra who designed a sari for Preity holds that India should be the theme of Bollywood fashion at Cannes and the outfits should showcase genuine Indian craftsmanship. CANNES 2003

ASh looked the thinnest, and the most well dressed of all years at cannes 2006...what does shobha de mean what she says indian women do not have the bodies for western clothes😕..i agree, priety zinta probably didnt carry it off as she's quite short, but why is Mrs.De stereotyping all indian women as girls who cant carry off western clothes....according to me, ash has carried herself quite well....or atleast, better than she did the previous times..and what does ms.De mean when she says indian women dont have the legs and thus when they try out a western look, they end up looking like penelope cruz's handmaidens😡 .....penelope is just 5-6..ash is 5-7.....and as bad priety would have looked, neither she nor ash looked like anyone's maidservant😡...so is shobha de in a way saying that indian women cannot match the westerners in height/looks??????....i dont agree...ash is prettier than salma hayek and would any day look better than her, if she's well dressed😆.......and does Ms.De say that only if we wear indian, do we truly become indians.....now i dont wear chudidhars, sarees and lehengas everyday but i'm 100% indian...and ash has always said that she tries to showcase india in the best of lights and some of her comments on chatshows raised eyebrows as they seemed to be too indianized..........shobha de has her unique style quotient..tattooes, flamboyant(often gaudy) jewellery, sarees etc....but is she saying that only if we wear indian at global events , do we truly beome indian😕.....

You are right. Generalising everyone and painting them with the same brush is not done.

Shobhaa De. Her condescending attitude to women she thinks are -less intelligent, who don't -agree- with her intellect and writing is just seen to be believed.

Dont take her too seriously, I think she has given herself (and a few of her esteemed circle of friedns like Shabana Azmi, who irritates me like Gawd knows how)too much importance of taking up for the -modern Indian woman-.

Rindam, I totally agree with what you wrote.

Talking about article, I would agree with her ONLY when she said to have some fusion outfits. I think it would looks really different and India does have brilliant craftsmenship. I see Indian clothes with kanjivaram border on shirts in all GAP stores these days. People just love them. Not a bad idea.

However, her comments about India girls cannot carry themselves on western clothes...please !!!!!!! Don't generalize Indian poplulation as a whole Ms. De!!! I agree with you buffie...Ash does look stunning and gorgeous. Pretty on other hand really look dumb. Sorry, no offense meant to her fans. I like her, but her dressing at Canes, not sure what she was thinking!!!

Well, frankly speaking, I feel both Ash and Preity look average in those western outfits. They would look ten times better and actually stand out in the brighter colours of an Indian outfit or an Indian-Western Fusion ensemble.

Especially Aishwarya - she has classical Indian beauty which shines the most in saris! She looks nice in western outfits, dont get me wrong, but gorgeous in saris.

Preity should have some bright colours in Indo-western fusion to bring out her vivacious personality. That gold dress makes her look dollish and subdued.

However, Ms. De, please do not generalize by saying that Indian women dont have the legs to carry off western outfits! That is just preposterous! 😡

LEGS depend on one's body structure and weight. They have nothing to do with being Indian or Western. Posture, which you are criticising in the case of Preity, can also be corrected.

What's up with Preeti's outfit. She looks like she is wearing a shakespearean time outfit. She is only missing the tight pants.
I think they could have worn nice sexy Indian saris. There is nothing wrong with wearing western outfits, but more and more I am finding out that Western civilization has a lot of pride about their culture. It's a very self- centered civilization.
This was the time to show that they are proud of their culture. If indian actors had done that then that Italian fashion designer wouldn't have copied sari and called it an "Italian Wrap." It was worn by Jay Lo in Oscars. Guys I swear it was a sari, yet they introduced as Italian Wrap.
And you know what else, on the other day I was watching a Spanish channel with my friend. Guess what, it was a regular Spanish show and they had a character wearing traditional Indian wedding groom outfit with silk and Rajestani chunni wrapped around his shoulders. He supposed to be an evil magician. I was like ," hey that's our outfit." And my co-workers like ," no it's a new spanish trend."

Mrs.De.. i guess its time for u to stop making those PAge-3 articles look like thrilling.. as they aren't thrilling when u say that indian girl don't have legs to support the dresses!.........😡

Ash is looking pretty good guys.. and the last picture where she is wearing the light blue+white dress... But yes.. i feel that they must have at least put some sort of indian emblem in their dresses.. like semi eastern -western dresses... its an international festival..come on... represent ur country gals!!!!! Not the western culture... and u know wht.. i think they are going in western dresses so that the west-media might consider them for a role in their movies.. and the directors might think if they wear a sari that oohooo.. this girl will take the supporting role in my film as the simple indian girl... somebody plz advice these actresses that if they are having these assumptions in their minds.. phhhuuullllleeeezzzzzzzzzzz .. give me a break!!!!!!!!!Its not the case!

I ho0bnestly think they both look pretty average in the crowd,but wearing something with a distinct Indian flavor would have made them stand out in the crowd as well as promoted our culture abroad...and honestly no outfit is sexier than a saree on Indian women.
