entire interview:
Prateik: The talented Mr Smit
[ 1 ]Prateik grows up at the movies. Filmfare meets the new kid on the block
What was your nickname in school?
Smit. Because my last name in school was Smit, from Smita, I wasn't quite Mr Smit then, rather Master Smit. I was okay with Smit. I thought it was kinda cool.
What's the naughtiest thing you've ever done?
(Laughs) I've done a lot of naughty things' Recently on the set of Gautham Menon's yet untitled film (the remake of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa), I had the water spray bottle in my hand. I went up to my co-star Amy Jackson and pretended to sneeze loudly and sprayed the water on her cheek and neck. Then I hid the bottle behind my back. She was disgusted and the look she gave me was priceless. I'd have loved to capture it on camera. She calmed down after I showed her the spray.
Which co-star makes you nervous?
Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Mr Aamir Khan. Amitji definitely. I'm in complete awe of them, both of them are so charismatic. I'm more nervous out of respect for them.
I don't know whether they sense my nervousness. But even after working with them I'm still anxious when I'm around Aamir and positively tongue tied when I'm with Amitji. And Prakashji (director, Aarakshan) too.
Which was the most difficult shot you've given so far?
It was for Aarakshan. A face off between Saif and me in a college canteen. I had lengthy dialogue with high funda Hindi, something I'm not used to speaking every day. I have a similar problem in the Gautham Menon film too. Though the Hindi was easy, the dialogue was really long. Memorising them was tough. At times when I lost my way, Saif and Prakashji helped me during Aarakshan. Whenever Gautham Menon realised I was fumbling, he'd tell me to take a breather and then we'd can some good shots.
If not an actor, what would you have liked to be?
A musician maybe or a sportsperson, definitely a cricketer.
Would you like to direct a film?
Yes, of course. But I have no idea when that will happen. I wouldn't like to direct a feel-good commercial film, not that I have anything against them. They're my lifeline and I'm really fond of them. When I direct a film it will be on the lines of Dhobi Ghat. A film that will stay with the audience. Making a film like that takes years of experience. Don't know whether I will do it but it is a thought at the back of my mind.
Who's your favourite actress?
Natalie Portman. She was beyond amazing in Black Swan. Angelina Jolie is really good. Closer home it would be Kareena Kapoor.
Which films have you enjoyed watching?
Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Ace Ventura, The Truman Show, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Godfather series, Scarface, Donnie Brasco'
Who do you trust the most?
My grandmom (Vidyatai Patil). In fact, the entire side of my mother's family. They've always been there for me. I trust my dad.
Who are the people who mean the most to you?
My mom's side of the family.
What attracts you to a girl?
The eyes. That's the first thing, I notice about a girl.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes I do. I've fallen in love at first sight only once so far. Actually, I don't know. It's a tough question. I've been in love a couple of times and if I really think about it, when the situation happened, I thought it was love at first sight. Then complications arose and something or the other went wrong. Guess that's part and parcel of life.
What makes you angry?
Betrayal, I guess. I've been betrayed a few times and that made me angry, frustrated and sad.
When was the last time you cried?
I cry a lot to myself every other day. Strange things set me off. Random things.
What terrifies you?
Insects. More than terrify, they irritate me. I feel destructive towards them. If there's a fly nearby, I'll keep flapping my arms till it goes away.
What kind of music do you listen to?
All kinds. More so '80s and '90s rock and roll. Recent rock and roll too. I enjoy listening to Guns N Roses, especially their lead singer Axl Rose. Steven Tyler Aerosmith. I've always connected with Aerosmith because I was Smit in school and Aerosmith seems like Smit flies off. I relate that name to my need to fly and touch the sky.
Which words do you use most often?
Shit. And the other one which you can't print. I think all of us use it but like Matt Damon once said in an interview. "Every third word we use is the 'F' word." I found that funny since I thought I was the only one using it so often. I use 'Holy moly' a lot nowadays. I might have picked it up from some rockstar somewhere. It can be an exclamation, or said in surprise, depending on the way you say it.
Can you cook?
Nothing except eggs.
What do you love to eat?
I like everything that's classified as junk food but I no longer indulge myself.
Which is your favourite season and why?
I love the winter in Mumbai. I enjoy going on long drives in cool weather and having fun with friends.
Which are the three things you never leave home without?
My cell phone, cigarettes and cologne.
