Part 2
He didn't have to work his way to things... things would come to him... that was his persona, his charisma! Born with a silver spoon to one of the most influential families of the country, he had been used to the luxury of having anything he wanted at his disposal. Threateningly intense and intimidating, he could turn the direction of the tornados by simply standing in their way. His Dadi who would carry herself with poise and grace at all times, had cried tears of joy when he was born.
Savitri Devi, his grandmother was a woman of substance. Her husband was a well-known political figure and was killed during one of the election campaigns. Her son, Viren, had taken over the reigns of the business immediately after his father's demise. However Viren was young and nave and the political rivals of his father tried every bit to tarnish the name of the family. Savitri Devi, who came from a bureaucratic family and had learned to live with dignity all her life, did not waste time in crying over the unfortunate stance of her fate but straight away stood up for the pride of her dead husband and became the pillar of strength for her son. Media, though not that proficient in those times, and their competitors had mocked her when she entered the office space. But no one could mellow the zeal of this woman and eventually all those who had once ridiculed her fell to her feet, defeated. Viren and his wife, Nandita could never fall out of the awe they felt for Savitri.
Savitri had been overwhelmed with happiness when Viren and Nandita had told her that she was going to be a grandmother. It was as if she got a new purpose to her life. And then slowly and steadily all the troubles started dissipating. The bogus allegations against the Khuranas were starting to clear off as truth begun to surface. New opportunities came knocking at the doors of Khuranas. The day Nandita gave birth to the Khurana heir, justice was met and murderers of Savitri Devi's husband were put behind bars. The family had restored its lost pride and honour. So, after all was settled, when Savitri first took the baby in her arms, choked with emotions 'Maan' was the only word that she could utter. To everyone's surprise, the child instantly responded to the word and smiled at his grandmother as if he could completely understand what she meant. And so he was named Maan! In the next five years, Viren and Nandita were blessed with three more children - Dev, Vikrant and Anahita, who completed the Khurana family.
Maan started growing under the strict surveillance of his grandmother. Right from his young days, the child commanded undivided attention. He got what he wanted... But at the same time, the strong values of the family were slowly being instilled into his character... Savitri made sure that the undiluted affection of the household was not to catch up with his head or in that matter any of her grandchildren's, for she could not stand her grandchildren ending up to be the brats of the high-class society. Maan, though a child having huge temper tantrums was compassionate at heart. He was responsible, caring and protective towards his siblings. Dev was a little indifferent and self-centered, however not bad at heart, Vikrant idealized Maan and Anahita, being the youngest was the apple of everyone's eyes. Maan operated on polarities. Either he liked someone or he despised them. He loved or he hated. There were no in-between paths for him. Everyone knew Maan Singh Khurana was a no-nonsense guy!
After graduating in management from Harvard, he came back to India and joined office. When Maan joined office the whole staff was startled, because although Viren had a cabin ready for the to-be-CEO of the company, Maan declined the position and started off at a managerial level. "People struggle all their lives with their careers and it takes them years to reach this position. And just because I'm from the family I directly take off to being the CEO... would it be fair? I know I can't start from the trainee level but managerial is fair enough. And dadima how will I able to tackle the business if I don't know my staff and the nitty-gritty of our business well. I want to know everything before I take the big responsibility dad. I don't want to disappoint you, Dadima or mom at point of time" He had said to his dad and dadi when they asked him to explain his stand. Savitri had smiled and gave him two years to explore the business before he took over as the CEO. He had put in his best in those two years. He had slowly started his taking everything under his wings and soon enough he was making decisions for the company. While Viren had continued serving the MD post, he had kept an eye over his son's activities. Yes he had kept with his name, Maan, a man of honour and his father was proud of him. Two years later, keeping to his words, Maan took the position of the CEO of the company.
Naintara entered Khurana mansion with Dev when he came back after finishing his studies. Dev had got secretly married to her in London. Everyone was shocked and Dadi expressed her disapproval of Dev's actions. However since they had already registered their marriage, Khuranas had no option left but to accept her. Viren and Nandita immediately announced a grand wedding and Dev and Naintara ceremoniously got married again. While all of this happened Vikrant, who studied in same university as Dev and knew Naintara well was shocked when Anahita told him about Dev and Naintara's wedding. He was never too fond of Naintara and so decided to stay away from this marriage fiasco. Naintara often felt threatened by the adulations that Maan received and would always wonder how it would be when he would get married. Anahita tried making a few friendly gestures towards her new bhabhi but was soon put off by her behavior and attitude. Dev shortly joined office too, but since he couldn't tolerate his brother's authoritative stand, it led to arguments between the brothers. Viren decided that it was better if Dev handled another arm of the business. On Nandita's suggestion and after having it discussed it with Savitri and Maan, it was decided that Dev would take over the hospitality business of Khuranas. Dev and Naintara soon shifted to Mumbai to preside over the 5-star hotel chain East-Villas.
It was after couple of months that Dev and Naintara left for Mumbai, She walked into his life. He, who considered work to be the love of his life, never thought would be won over so soon by a simple, fragile, innocent girl. It was not until she walked in did he realize that he too had desires and dreams... that he too was capable of being in love... "Maan Singh Khurana and love? BOOMMM!!! When did these two mutually explosive phenomena collide Veerji?" Anahita had poked when she discovered about her... She was beautiful indeed but he had seen many girls who were much more beautiful than she was... Then what was so special about her, he could never fathom.
He was happy and contented with the course of his life. He was doing fairly well for the business. All the happiness of the mortal world touched his feet... He thought he was blessed... Blessed with everything that made life worth living... That made him look forward to each day... Until he let her take him to this periphery... Why? Why did she come if she just had to leave like this? Why did she walk over him? Why did he allow her to come so near to him? Had he been himself, he wouldn't have been sitting here today by this lake, in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to go! He didn't ask her to come, yet she came... he didn't ask her to show him those dreams, yet she taught him to dream... and when those dreams became the heart of his existence, she ripped them from him! He was angry... at her... at the world... and much more at himself... only if he would have seen through her... only if he would have maintained a grip on himself when it was not too late' only if he could just erase all those memories now... and then he looked at the sky and not being able to bear the pain that cut through him, he screamed, "WHY??"... as if demanding an answer from the heavens above!
He shut his eyes but still couldn't shut her... all he saw was her... dressed in the red bridal attire, in all her splendor! He couldn't keep himself from thinking about all those times when he had wanted to see her that way... see her as a bride... so many times had he visualized her in that attire... visualized her as his bride... And today when he saw her all he felt was hurt and betrayal... Pain, Rage, fury, frustration and desperation, all he felt in that one moment when he saw her... he saw HIS Geet at the mandap, standing in her glory, putting the Varmala around someone else's neck... the torment he went through, numbed him to the core of his being... numbed his soul!
How could she do that? How could she just walk away? Was it that easy for her? Did she never feel for him the way he did? All her promises, her assurances, were they false? Was she just toying around with his feelings? All sort of questions clouded his mind as he remembered the actuality that was thrown in his face! He had heard her say, this is what she wanted... he had heard her say that this wedding was her happiness... yet he had hoped and stayed and prayed that it was not true... yet he had wished that she would run to him and hold him tight in her embrace once more... even if once she would have turned to him, he would have never let her go... he would have let go of everything else... he wouldn't have questioned her once and would have taken her back... What a fool he had been to keep expecting it till the last moment! He should have known that she would not come...
All his life, he got everything he wanted... Nothing was ever out of reach for him... But today when for first time he really understood need, want and desire... knew that all he needed was her and nothing else... he had lost her and now all the paths that could have led him to her were sealed forever... She belonged to someone else now... Agony shot through him once more as the thought crossed his mind that his Geet, was probably lying in someone else's arms right now and that someone else was holding her to himself... He shut his eyes tight in a desperate attempt to shake that thought out of his head... he clutched a fragile stem of nearby thorny bush so hard in his fist that his knuckles went white and the thorns pierced his palm and then the stem broke... never in his life had he felt so helpless... so empty... so broken! He wanted his answers... but he would not go back to ask her and give her a yet another opportunity to mock him.
Helpless, Dejected and Broken, he collected himself and walked towards his car and sat inside on the driver's seat... As he sat inside, he looked once at the passenger seat of the car, where she sat countless times before and would tell him practically about anything and everything... he couldn't understand how... but he was sure he could still smell the lingering fragrance of her perfume and feel her presence there... frustrated he banged at the steering wheel once, before putting the car into gear and rushing away from there... Would he be able to ever wipe out her existence from his life just as she did? He asked himself but didn't dare answer... he knew it well that even after her betrayal, his heart pinned for her and would continue to do so... Aggravated, he sped the car further without completely seeing where he was driving and he banged the car right into the tree... Finally the emotional defeat coupled with the alcohol and the impact of the accident took over and he fell unconscious.
