nice one.. do update the first part soon..
Author's note: I said I would update early next week, but have been so, so overwhelmed by the responses to the intro and the video preview, that I decided to post Part 1 today itself... a little surprise, as an expression of my heartfelt gratitude to all of you guys! Here goes...
Part 1
Apparently, it was just another day in the big city. People rushing, huffing and puffing, to some place or the other, cars irritably honking their way through the stagnant smoke-filled roads, random bystanders standing by randomly.
It's funny, one could muse, how perspective changes everything. The way one looks at things changes the things one looks at.
For Geet Handa, it was far from being just another day. It was, in a manner of speaking, her first day in the big city, the day when she would finally begin to make a niche for herself in the hearts of one and all.
Pinky, in whose house she was staying as a paying guest, had told her that Arti Sen was auditioning for the main lead of her next serial. Of course, Geet wanted to be a Bollywood actress, but an Arti Sen serial was bound to be outstandingly popular. If she could just somehow get herself in there, Bollywood would logically be the next step.
Geet had been so excited when she heard of the audition that she had begun to dance around the house and had spectacularly collided with Pinky's father. There had been a brief awkward moment when he told her that her family would be very proud of her. But, being the brilliant actress that she was, Geet had taken this in her stride and had nodded like the dutiful daughter that she wasn't.
Poor Mr Marchanda had no idea that Geet had in fact run away from home when her crazy family had tried to marry her to some pathetic, mindnumbingly boring guy with absolutely no sense of humour, and whose highest ambition was to eat makke ki roti and sarson ka saag for the rest of his life, accompanied by a submissive wife and an army of brats.
Geet actually shuddered when she thought back to the day he had come to see her with his overpopulated family. Her hyper-hyperactive family had been at its level best that day, laughing maniacally as they ostentatiously sang extravagant praises of Geet and forced laddoo after laddoo in the suitor's mouth... Laddoos, that obviously Geet had made, as per the Handas. Her whole family knew that Geet could not even boil water, so the women had busied themselves preparing everything, while Geet was gaping at the incredible fuss that was being made, and planning her getaway.
After the guy had left, Geet had informed her family that she wanted to be a Bollywood actress, bracing herself for the imminent explosion of Handa-ness. Sure enough, once they had come out of their overacted shocked states, everybody had sunk into their respective roles.
The women had begun "nahiiiin"-ing, and repeating all the usual lines of "pichle janam mein aise kya paap kiye the, jo aisi beti mil gayi," etc. Her grandfather, Daarji, and the other men in the family had also taken the cue and begun to ramble on about "ghar ki izzat."
Brij, her brother, who had always been a bit weird and off-key, had become all violent and had begun screaming something about killing her. At that point, Geet, who was pretending to be sad and scared, just had to burst out laughing. Where did this guy come from? Honestly! Brij had gotten a bit confused, seeing her laugh, and had improvised, changing his tactical stance to glaring and incoherent mumbling.
That night, despite the supposedly strict vigil, Geet had run away with Brij's money. And his favourite scarf, just to annoy him. She had planned to run away from the start, but thought it would be more fun if she informed her family first.
And now, there she was, in Delhi, soon to be a superstar. Now, Mumbai would have been the logical choice for a struggling actor. But she did not know anyone there, so she had decided she would stay with her friend Pinky in Delhi and build up contacts, so that she could get to Mumbai one day.
"Bhaiyya," Geet said to the autowallah who had stopped for her, "iss address tak le jaayenge?"
"Dilli mein aap nayee hain?" he asked, glancing at the note she had tended out.
"Jee."
The autowallah smiled to himself. You see, he really wasn't a bad guy, but, you have to understand, the life of an autowallah can get very dull at times. It's kind of natural that he should be grateful for any opportunity to play a prank on some new-in-town bakra. Or bakri, whichever the case may be. He took her on a long drive, and stopped her in front of the wrong building, grinning widely as he drove off.
Geet took a deep breath, patted her hair, and entered the studio, in her well-practised star attitude. This is it, Geet Handa, she told herself repeatedly, this is it.
A nerdy-looking guy, looking positively panic-stricken for some reason, came up to her, pointed her to her seat, and rushed off, mumbling something about "Dadi." Geet squinted at all the girls waiting for their turn neatly stacked in two rows of chairs. She promptly convinced herself that she was prettier and smarter, by far.
"These are the auditions for Arti Sen, right?" Geet asked the girl sitting next to her, who kept re-doing her makeup, clearly intending to look scarier with every passing second.
"Arti Sen?" the girl asked, puzzled, "Is she also..? Um, I... I don't know about that. She might be helping with the auditions, I guess. All I know is, we are auditioning to be Maan Singh Khurana's fiance."
"Oh really, that's the role? Thanks, yaar. I didn't know that. So, this... Maan, he is the character? Like, the main lead?"
"What a character," the girl sighed, and she got back to plastering mascara on her eyelashes.
Geet decided the girl was not a very helpful conversationalist and continued to give herself her customary pep talks. She had a very strong feeling that this day was going to change her life forever. She thanked Babaji in advance. (Always a good idea not to postpone things).
She was wondering if the auditions had started at all, since the queue had not moved in a long time, when all of a sudden, a hush fell over the room. The girl next to her lowered her lip gloss, gasped, sighed and began to gaze dreamily at the door.
"Dhak dhak," the girl managed to utter weakly through her constricted breathing.
