Nothing Can Keep Us ApartPart 29 - Jodi Kamaal Ki Hai
"Mr. Khurana?" were the words that greeted Maan when he answered his phone Thursday evening.
"Yes, Mr. Chopra, how can I help you?"
"Mr. Khurana, I have to leave tomorrow for a two week trip to London. I'd like to look over the finalized blueprints and files before I go."
"I'm sure we can set up a meeting for you, Mr. Chopra."
"I'm afraid that a meeting won't be possible, as I have to be at the airport by 12. I'd like to send one of my associates over first thing in the morning to collect everything. That way I can review all the documents and tell you what I think before I leave."
"That will be fine, Mr. Chopra. I'll have everything ready for you tomorrow morning." After finishing his call with Mr. Chopra, Maan went to find Geet and tell her that he was going back to the office to finish the blueprints for the Chopra project.
"I should work on those with you."
"No, Geet, it's late. You go to bed and don't worry about it."
Geet gave Maan an annoyed look and put her hands on her hips. "Don't worry about it? It's my project, of course I'll worry about it." Geet thought for a moment, then said, "Instead of working at the office, bring everything home, and we'll finish it up together."
Maan was not liking this idea, but Geet wouldn't let it go. "Maan, it's a good idea. With two of us, the work will go much faster. Besides, you haven't had nearly as much time on this project as I have. You're sure to have questions that you would need to ask me."
Finally, after much persuasion on Geet's part, Maan agreed to bring everything from the office. It was midnight by the time Maan returned from the office with all the plans. He again tried persuading Geet to go to sleep, but Geet just told him that they could either waste time arguing, or they could get to work. Maan doesn't like wasting time, so he gave up trying to change Geet's mind. Their work went along nicely for a few hours, until Maan started talking about adding air conditioning to the plans. Geet was against it.
"Geet, AC will make these plans perfect. It's just the type of luxury we want to include. The technical specifications fit together perfectly. What's your problem?"
"Maan, I know very little about technical specifications, but I know a lot about middle class families. They aren't used to things like AC." Rubbing her arms, Geet added that AC will make them feel very cold in their house.
Maan just shook his head and responded, "You're always complaining about feeling cold from the AC." He walked over to grab the AC remote, and then walked back over to Geet. Holding the remote out to her, he said, "When you feel cold, change the temperature. That's what the remote is for. All AC units can be controlled with the remotes, so again, what is your problem?"
Geet took the remote, used it to turn the AC off, and then said back to Maan, "It's not just a question of temperature. It's also a question of money. Middle class families don't have the kind of money to spend on things like AC. If they do, they'll want to use it for other things that are more important."
Geet could tell that Maan was not liking what she was saying, so she tried to think of a way to convince him. "Maan, when Sasha suggested changing the plans to have parking, and I said it wasn't a good idea, you agreed, right?"
"Yes."
"Well, the reasoning that I used then applies to this situation as well."
Maan thought for a minute, then said, "I can see your point. However, I want these houses to have something special. I want to include things that these families never would have thought to have in a home. That was one of the main purposes of this project."
Geet became excited as she thought of an idea that might be a good compromise. "Maan, instead of AC, let's included ceiling fans in all the rooms."
"Kya?"
"No, really, this is a good idea. Ceiling fans are much less expensive than AC, but they still help you feel cool. Most middle class families have probably never lived in a place where there were ceiling fans, so it would seem very luxurious to them. Please, think about it."
Maan considered Geet's idea, and eventually agreed that is was a good choice. He continued to work on updating the blueprints, until around 3 am. At that point he glanced over at Geet and saw that she had fallen asleep on the desk. Thinking to himself that he would be able to finish on his own, he carefully picked Geet up, and carried her upstairs to put her to bed.
The next morning, Geet woke up to see Maan getting ready to leave for the office. She quickly got out of bed and started to rush to get ready also. Maan asked her what she was doing, rushing around like that.
"I'm getting ready to go to the office with you."
"No, Geet, you were up too late last night. You need to stay here and get some more sleep."
Geet gave Maan a "don't mess with me look" and told him that she was coming. Pointing her finger at him she said, "Wait for me. If you don't, I'll only come by my self, anyways." Maan rolled his eyes at his stubborn wife, and prepared to wait for her to get ready.
****************
Not too long after Maan and Geet arrived at their office, Mr. Chopra called. Maan informed him that the project designs were ready to be picked up. Mr. Chopra then explained to Maan that his flight time had changed, and he wanted to come to their office within the hour to discuss the project with him and Geet. Maan told all this to Geet, but when he saw her yawning, he again told her that he could take care of everything, and that she should rest, but Geet was stubborn.
When Mr. Chopra came, he happily listened to Maan and Geet's presentation. As they explained all the designs, Maan and Geet complemented each other perfectly. Maan explained all the technical aspects of the project, while Geet narrated the more human aspects. In the end, Mr. Chopra was extremely pleased, and gave many compliments.
"Mr. Khurana, this is without a doubt, one of the most well thought out, and explained presentations I have every been part of. I'll sign off on this 100%. I'd like to have a launch party soon after I come back from London. I hope Mrs. Khurana will arrange it herself. I also want to say that Aapki aur Mrs. Khurana ki jodi kamaal ki hai. It's been a pleasure working with both of you."
With that, Mr. Chopra left, and a very happy Maan and Geet went back to their office. Maan thanked Geet for all the work that she did, and acknowledged that the success of this project depended a lot on her efforts. Geet was so happy to hear these words of praise from Maan. However, her happiness couldn't stop her from yawning. When Maan saw this, he used the phone to tell Muskaan to hold all their calls and then closed the office blinds. He then pulled Geet over to the sofa and told her that he wanted her to sleep for a few hours.
"But Maan, how can I do that? There's still so much work to be done."
"Geet, Mr. Chopra is going to be gone for two weeks. After all the hard work you've been putting in, I think you can take a few hours just to rest. Bas! I don't want to hear any more arguments, you just go to sleep."
