What went wrong Between Mani Ratnam and Manisha K?

I loved their combo in Bombay and Dil Se. Even though Dil se Bombed at the BO, Manisha given one of her best performances. I thought he will cast her again but i don't see he will ever cast her. so what went wrong? Mani has given his best work with movie Anjali and Bombay, i even loved Dil Se but i heard lots of scenes were chopped by the censor. However i hope he will cast Manisha soon, she still looks beautiful and she hasn't lost her touch.

I guess nothing.... I dont think they had a fall out or anything. Infact even when Manisha had nearly disappeared he offered her Dil Se with a condition of her losing weight.

Its a shame Dil se was a flop, i loved the movie and I loved SRK in the movie. I think after Dil Se's failure he sort of stuck to his Raj/Rahul roles for a long time, which is a shame bcoz if the movie had worked he would have experimented a bit more.

I agree, SRK experimented a lot less with his movies than Aamir did. Something that always made Aamir, in my opinion, (though I've always grown up adoring SRK more) an eventual better actor in terms of giving to the kind of characters he does.


Back to the topic, Dil Se was an epic in that kind of era. I still fail to understand why people didn't like it. It was extremely emotional, very well made, and some really, really good performances, not only by the main cast, but by the supporting cast too. Sadly, I never watched Bombay, I guess I was really small at that time so Mum wouldn't have taken me perhaps. I should catch it one of these days.

Mani Ratnam proved very early he's a master story teller. I haven't watched Raavan so I can't tell, but Guru deserved all the praise it got!

i guess u dun understand such love stories, which are intense, take sidma for example---sid by far is the most immature and ridiculous character in my opinion, i never liked the couple in kitni mohabbat hai--either, i suggest u watch dil se again to understand the movie! it is pretty simple a guy falls in love wid a girl very intensely who turns out to be a terrorist! i think the physical parts were not liked much, but i loved it!

Dil Se will remain an epic movie for me, but it was Manisha Koirala's performance that blew me away. Frankly, the film would not have been the same without her, and from my experience, Manisha's performance in Dil Se is by far the best performance ever given by a Bollywood actor. Such a complex role and she pulled it off so well! There's not a single instant where she overacts or goes OTT. It's rare to make the audiences sympathies with a terrorist, but Manisha does it very well. Especially at the last scene where she starts realizing what she had been doing for so long. I wish the movie would have focused more on Manisha's upbringing, her psychology, etc but then, Dil se wasn't a film on terrorism; it was more of a love story based on the backdrop of terrorism. SRK was commendable in his role.
The music was pretty haunting and complemented the overall tone of the movie.

The only thing I did not like about the movie was the senseless songs and dances forcefully inserted in the movie. Granted that the music was excellent, but the unnecessary dance sequences made the film loose its originality. Like what was the point of SRK dancing on a train with a random girl, Manisha and SRK dancing crazily etc? They could have cut away those songs from the movie.

And contrary to the popular belief, Dil Se was successful at the box office, but not at the ones in India. It made great business overseas.

Those were the times excellent movies weren't successful in India. I am glad that's changing now however, it was such a RELIEF not seeing Kites being successful.

I agree everyone puts in hard work, and that they must have worked a lot, but if we go by that logic, every movie should be a successful one.
