Of course I am. A week back I just got my OCI card (Overseas Citizen of India)
Mind you, I've not been born in the country, I've visited it what- say 8 times? I've perhaps seen a quarter of the country alone, and I know Mauritius is supposed to be my motherland.
But amongst it all, India's always been India. There's not been once in those 8 times I haven't felt at home while being in India. And that's not just because I am at Nani's or Masi's home eating the best home food in the world. It's because when you're Indian at heart, you forget anything else. India is not the best country in the world, true! Who says it must be for me to be proud of it? India has corrupted politicians, never-ending poverty, pending legacies, and obsessed happenings. BUT, India also has dedicated workers, thousands of institutions working day and night to remove a few more families from the slums when dawn settles, hundreds of scholars, scientists and researches giving their best to the country, talent and skill in places never once-known before. That's India for me!
I'm initiating this because I read someone earlier on saying it's easy to say all this when you're not in the country. I say it's unluckily being in the country and not even realizing the kind of chance you have. If I could control that, I would come and give my due to the country as soon as I could. In fact, I will as soon as I am old enough to make my own money! But it's also unfortunate that just because they pay taxes in the country they call themselves Indians. That would be the last reason I would call myself an Indian for. It is more about giving back what the country has given you throughout the years than comparing everything in terms of money!
