I agree that sometimes..wait no..most of the time Indian dramas are a lil unrealistic..i know that..but im sure that doesnt stop the people who love them to stop watching them..i myself am a indian soap lover..and i agree that there are stereotypes. Ya a lot of stuff they show arent that realistic but some stuff happenes..like the saas bahu stuff...gosh u shud see my nanu and and my aunts..and the vamps...i have a lot of those in my family..ya they dont dress like our usual vamps but their just as evil..but shows are changing nowadays to new topics

There was a point in my life when i used to watch all the serials that were ever made.. thats how "dramaholic" came about lol..but serioulsy, once you see it all, there is nothing new which interests you.. Instead it makes me so sick, when i hear channels making the same type of serials.. Example - there was a phase when we had reality shows, and now Star one is addicted to just youth based shows..It just makes me feel quite sick seeing so much of the same concept and styles.

Nothing new or fresh to see from any channel.. Dramas are going down hill =|

Its because of couples.....When they fall in love we fall in love with them and get attached.....Like now Im crazy in love with naitik-akshara jodi! And guess wat they are married and together and they made us happy
So when these shows make us happy we watch them.....and when the storyline gets twisted we stop.....:)

The serials are like pulp fiction .
Those who see them are home based people , mostly stay at home wives , moms , elderly women .
The break from monotony of life , without having to go out , convenient to fit in with the routine . are the reasons for watching them , even if one finds it silly at times .
Many a times , a wife has to remain confined to indoors for the child to come from school , the husband comes late , or the maid has timings when you have to stick around . Tv gives company in these days of nuclear family .
How many times can one see the news broadcast ? the same is being repeated on all the channels & many times with much more drama .
The so called reality shows are also doctored .
The music & dance shows are all the same .
The mythological serials seem too fanciful .
Earlier , the serial would be broadcast once a week , like Humlog , Buniyaad , Kora Kagaz, Saans etc.. Since the episodes were few , only the essentials of the story were shot . But now the daily broadcast forces the director to shoot for everyday even if there is no content .
Then , the producer has a contract for certain episodes , even if the story is not that long he has to prolong it , or if TRP is good , he wants to prolong it at the cost of the plot .
I read that the serials on COLOR Channel with child actors were slated to have the children for afew episodes , but Balika Vadhu & Uttaran actors became so popular , that their roles were extended .
It all boils down to TRPs
In one interview one of the famous producers revealed that when they find the TRPs dropping , they have to bring in a crisis in the serial , an accident , death , or coming from the dead , whatever is possible . Just as even if one do not like a story book , one wants to know the end , one can simply flip to the end . However in the serials you feel , let me see what happens next , & you are hooked for a few episodes .

Watching serials is also like participating in the neighbourhood grapevine . Atleast , it keeps one away from interfering in others' lives .

very realistic and honestt topic. i agree that people are bringing seriels in homes and making them something so big. no matter what they contain (unrealistic situations, mostly) we wont stop watching them. these seriels are meant for people who are bored or have nothing to do (sit home, like grandparents) its a sort of entertainment for them daily. so i guess its also has some benefits of its own. just people like ekta who take advantage of this.
also, the comments posted by people are both sides- (why are we watching them, and why we should and are watching them.) i really loved the point made about traditions and cultures- and how even abroad, we can relate to india and its cultures through soaps. i also love watching the indian clothing (and men) ...some things that attract me into watching these at times. but every day def. gives me a headache with slow motions and unneccessary flashes and zooms. hehe.

I couldn't agree more! I don't get it either why people are soo much interested in 'typical' shows but after so much of thought, all i could conclude is that people don't watch shows for story, in fact they watch it for particular couple and "rom-yawnce" btwn them! There are very less intelligent viewers in indian tellywood and they don't care if the story line; if the plot is butchered... all they want is there favs to be together and have romantic sequences! Another reason that i conclude for people like my aunts is that they watch it just for time-pass being house-wives since they have nothing else to do! Indian television doesn't offer anything except the regular saas-bahu track where every protagonist is typical indian "abla-nari" and all vamps are modern with long bindis and stylish sarees...in some case even western clothes! I totally do get sick of such shows which is the reason i don't watch them!

But it would be wrong to say that all indian shows were stereo-typical! There came shows like "hip hip hurray", "sarabhai vs sarabhai", "remix", "hotel kingston"...basically all season 1 shows on star one apart from hip hip hurray which was aired on zee during late 90's that changed the whole outlook of indian television! There were many comedy shows before like khichdi, office office, yes boss but when sarabhai came...it gave new meaning to comedy and was very well depicted targetting all types of audience: male, female, middle-class, upper-class, youth, adults...everyone! The show was for intelligent and regular viewers both! These type of shows is what i am looking for in indian television industry! Other one was hotel kingston...totally different, unique concept and beautifully depicted the lifestyle of 5 star hotels in india and the problems it faced! Along with that, it beautifully depicted the love story of shelly and vish...these are the type of shows that i am expecting to see on indian tv!

Now there were youth shows like "hip hip hurray" and "remix"...which were true classics in their own respective times! Both shows dealt with real life problems that teenagers faces...problems with friends, teachers, parents, principals...impulsiveness, our attitude of rebelling against what we feel is wrong, turning from an immature person to a mature one...these are the type of shows that i love to watch where we can relate to...it gives us entertainment but also makes sense, has plot and relates to our lives! Now people might aruge that remix was a copy of an argentian show "rebelde way" but it was not! It was a re-make, where cris morena (the creator of rebelde way) gave her script to shrishti arya to make its indian version!

What pisses me off is that indians are known to be one of the most creative people...talented people but with such shows, they are just wasting the talent because these shows might be a trend currently, but later no1 will remember them...take for example, kyunki...its remembered but as one of the worst shows because it was dragged and dragged and dragged! Each nd every show starts off with a different concept which runs for 3-4 months and then its becomes a drag because that story gets finished but the show doens't and we see same old, repeated stories in the show!

Like you said, most of the shows on TV are just same with different actors and sets...and because of the lack of choices these days, people just tend to watch anything that comes of TV! They have no choice to do anything but watch it and once they start seeing it, they get addicted to the show...to know what is going to happen next even though we can very well assume what is going to happen but in a hope of seeing something different, we just keep on watching the show! That's all i can say...but i seriously hope that we do get more shows like sarabhai vs sarabhai, hip hip hurray, remix, special squad on television!

Somebody please start a petition to ban shoba kapoor and ekta kapoor from tv. They simply dare the censors, and the censors appear to be for sale.

Friday in one tamil serial a woman is shown beating her tummy on the delivery table. Her husband asks the doctor how the child is doing, not aware of what has happened. The chid has been murdered in it's mother's womb.
That's how gross reel tv is.
