Gangster Abu Salem is singing. During interrogation by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Salem revealed that Iqbal Akhtarwala, an event management professional was the go-between for his extortion deals in Bollywood.

'Perform, or else!'

ATS sources said Akhtarwala allegedly passed on phone numbers of filmstars, directors and producers (see box) to Salem, who not only extorted money from them, but also forced them to perform shows and events abroad.

"Salem said he used to receive calls from Akhtarwala who used to pass on the information, assets and cell numbers of the stars to him. He also arrived at a consensus on the extortion amounts with the don," said an ATS source.

Salem added he used to be in constant touch with an US-based event organiser, Farhad Hussain, who used Salem's contacts to get filmstars to comply with dates.

Akhtarwala, who runs Show Blitz Entertainment, is also in the good books of the Chhota Shakeel and Ejaz Lakdawala gang, and is believed to have played a key role in the firing on Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik's father, by Salem's men in 2001.

Three months after the shootout, Hrithik performed at a concert, 'The Roshans' at New Delhi, which was organised by Akhtarwala's company. Sources add that the star and his family performed the concert for free and the ticket proceeds was acquired by Salem through hawala.

Man is in UAE

Akhtarwala, who is in UAE, is wanted in a land-grabbing case in 2004. He along with Riyaz Bhaati and an associate threatened to kill the builder on behalf of Chhota Shakeel for which Akhtarwala has been booked under MCOCA. He is since absconding.
