Wow, I didn't think the topic would get this hot! I have to say, when I made my first 'pro-drinking' post, I thought I would get slaughtered, but I'm glad I was proved wrong!😊 The IF bunch are a friendly lot, of course, no matter what your opinion!

I've read some really wonderfully written posts, especially those by Caryn, Aisha, Radheradhe, Yeah and Simtara. So thanks for that everyone!👏

Now, back to the point here. This thread is about women drinking, and our views on it. But somehow, it has gravitated to how we view mothers drinking.
Aisha mentioned the mother who killed her baby, due to poisoning in the blood. Just to make it clear : this woman was an alcoholic. In my view, an alcoholic (male or female) is NOT fit to be a parent! If she were a casual drinker, do any of you really think the baby would have died or even been affected??? If she had been a casual drinker, don't you think she would have given up alcohol during her pregnancy for the sake of her child? Vitamin A is also bad during a pregnancy. A woman who knew this and still ate foods containing that, is just as bad as an alcoholic, because she cannot control herself for the sake of her child. So the point here I'm trying to make is that moderation is the key, whether it's food, drink, or anything for that matter!

My mother likes a glass of wine now and again. But I will stand up and challenge ANYONE who says that she is not a good mother or a role model to me! Anyone want to talk about literacy and education?? Well my parents came to the UK to work, without the basic bit of education. They brought me up with morals, taught me how to respect and love others, and educated me. And they drink. Oh, dear god....

honestly, though i appreciate the topic, i dont know why it's only women that the topic targets. men are just as likely to get any one of those diseases.. and why should women not drink just because they were born female.

don't get me wrong, i don't support casual drinking which becomes a habit, but i do not like the fact that the above article is sexiest.

It's my own opinion.

Well said, bibbo. Alcohol overdose affects everyone. Not just women. Alcoholism is the main cause for domestic violence. Men force their wives and children to go to work to sponsor their drinking habits. Why must women be the target? Deaths by drunken driving are not caused by women, but men.
I drink. I enjoy my wine and my gin and tonic. Anyone who knows me would know what kind of life I lead and believe me, there is nothing that I am embarrassed or ashamed of. A good enjoyable time for me is getting my girlfriends together, opening a wine bottle or two, having a great laugh and natter, watching a romantic comedy, discussing about life etc. Heck, when we IFians in Malaysia met, we met in Chilis and had margaritas etc. I did not see anyone falling off the stools; in fact Roja akka has invited us to her apartment to have uncle's famous gin and tonics (we will be there, akka, promise 😉)
I also understand the so-called 'hypocrites" for hiding their drinking habits from their parents, inlaws and so on because they know how judgemental society is, just like some of the posts here - and I do not mean this in a malicious manner. And I do get angry when people frown upon women drinking. It's her choice. I hate it when I go to parties when I am asked whether I would like orange juice when there are bottles of wine. (The orange juice is orange cordial which in my mind is more poisonous than wine!!!)
Anything overly done is bad for you - whether alcohol or even food. Just because a woman drinks does not mean that she is wayward. Just because a woman does not drink it does not mean that she is wonderful either. Diseases can be caused by various factors - the main one being chronic drinking. I have yet to come across a woman who is involved in chronic drinking; but tons of men - yes.
Red wine has tannin and it is good for your heart. Brandies and whiskies have medicinal values.
Moderation is the key. Now pardon me whilst I go and enjoy a gin and tonic. 😃

Brinny, precisely and well-said. I so agree. My bad encounters with alcoholism were not with women drinking too much - never faced that but with men. Men beating up their wives and children, men fighting with each other in parties in front of families, men using vulgar words. In fact, I hate men drinking because they can't control themselves. Men flirting or coming on to women old enough to be their daughters....and then these very men in the temple the next day with the vibuthi patthai.
Agree with you 110%. Another pro-drinker.

I luuuv to hear from you Caryn.
Yep Dr. K, some of those things said were audacious, because there have'nt been men who have gone so far over the limit in the life seen here. Neither for men nor women.
Dev Anand said very aptly "Dekno o deevanon tum yeh kaam na karo, raam ka naam badnaam na karo." That was a previous generation.
When we were children, we saw people consume alcohol or smoke. Yet yours sincerely never took up smoking. Some even went on to become great sportsmen, engineers, doctors and lawyers. Did we children follow suit? My point being that drugs and alcoholism are not genetic transformations of any kind, and it is a matter of choice. So are other lifestyle behaviors.
