G20 summit: Barack Obama is a fan of Harry Potter

President Obama may be the world's most famous man but he became positively star struck in the presence of the Harry Potter author J K Rowling.

The President made a beeline for Miss Rowling, at the end of the Downing Street G20 dinner, and told her that he had read all her books himself and to his children Sasha and Malia.

Miss Rowling then received a second presidential seal of approval for the boy wizard from Russia's President Medvedev and his wife Svetlana, who not only admitted to having read the Harry Potter books but also asked for her autograph.

Miss Rowling was one of an eclectic mix of notable women from the arts, business and sport who were being entertained at Downing Street by Gordon Brown's wife Sarah, with whom she is close friends. The guests at the dinner, created by television chef Jamie Oliver, had also included the internet entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox.

The US and Russian Presidents met up with them for coffee after enjoying their own dinner with Mr Brown and other fellow statesmen.

Ruth Jones, the actress from the television comedy Gavin & Stacey, was the life and soul of the party. She brought the house down when she announced loudly that she had thrown her crested invitation into the rubbish bin. She had assumed it was an April Fool's Day trick given the date of Wednesday's dinner.

The spouses' dinner guests were seated across four tables, with JK Rowling and Dame Kelly Holmes seated in prime position with Michelle Obama between them on table one. Dame Kelly and Mrs Obama had a long conversation about London's successful 2012 bid as the Obamas are backing as bid to stage the Olympics in Chicago, their home city, in 2016.

The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was seen deep in conversation with the model Naomi Campbell. Mrs Brown's mother, Pauline Macaulay, 71, was also present.

The menu was not only prepared by Jamie Oliver and a team from his Fifteen restaurant, but the celebrity chef waited on the women and afterwards joined them with his apprentices still dressed in their chef whites.

As talk of a $1 trillion bail-out dominated Thursday's G20 conference, Mrs Brown took the wives to the Royal Opera House for a morning of high culture. J K Rowling, who wore a pale pink shift dress, read extracts from her latest book, The Tales Of Beedle The Bard which was a best-seller last year. Mrs Obama dazzled in a bright blue Jason Wu dress and cardigan with pearls. Maggie Darling, the wife of the Chancellor, joined the gathering.

Highlights of the programme introduced by the TV presenter Mariella Frostrup included an extract from Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird and a short show by dancers from Ballet Black, a troupe set up to give performing opportunities to black and Asian classical dancers.

After the entertainment, the women took to the stage for a photo with dancers who were rehearsing for a production of Giselle. Laureen, the wife of Stephen Harper the Canadian Prime Minister, declared to her counterparts: "I will never be on the stage, this is my one and only chance."

Thanks for this info Labib!😃 I heard before that Mr. Barack Obama read all 7 books to his children as bedtime stories, and that the whole family was a HUGE fan of the HP series! Wow, I like Obama even more now because he loves HP!😆😛
And I heard this his kids had recently gone for a tour to the HP Movie Sets and met the whole HP cast. They're sooooo lucky!😍

J.K. Rowling had blasted the world with writing only seven books! She needs to write more (not necessarility HP< but it can be a new series or a novel, too). Anything she write will be wonderful, and full of insights and all, isn't it?

I know! JKR has to continue writing!😃 Actually, I don't want anymore HP books (unless it's an encyclopedia or something like that), because I think she wrote the series perfectly and I don't want it to be ruined by adding a sequel series with Harry's kids or a prequel series with the Marauders. I know lots of people who want her to do a prequel series or a sequel series, but where would our imagination come in then? Also, lots of people are either Snape fans or James fans, so writing a prequel series would make about half her fans hate it and lots of people don't like the epilogue of DH so writing a sequel series would make half her fans hate it.
I think she should write a new series (something on vampires this time because I know it'd be way cooler than Twilight😉😈 and the Twilight fandom would go down), because I for one would read any of her work.

^ Well I agree on not writing another HP book. As much as I love this series, I can't deny that adding another [extra] book to the already-completed series is gonna make it worse, and people would then loose their charm on it. Like the hindi soaps.
And no, I do not think she is gonna write a one on vampires (though I assume you were simply joking then). As far as I can remember, she said that clearly she is not gonna write any more fantasies, cause she had given all her fantastic imaginations and stuffs in the HP series, so now writing another one would mean she will keep on borrowing ideas from HP.
