London:
Low-budget Indian drama Slumdog Millionaire garnered 11 nominations at the BAFTA film awards on Thursday, building on its success at the Golden Globes and giving it a further boost ahead of the Oscars next month.

It was tied at the top with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, followed by Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight which won nine nominations and Clint Eastwood's drama Changeling, which won eight. Frost/Nixon has six nominations, The Reader five and In Bruges, Milk and Revolutionary Road have four apiece, organisers of the Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) said.

Slumdog Millionaire, which tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who goes in search of wealth and love on a television game show, led the field at the Golden Globes in the United States earlier this month.

It was shortlisted for best film, Danny Boyle is in the running for the best director award and lead actor Dev Patel is vying for best leading actor.

The BAFTAs will be awarded in London on February 8.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, in which Pitt's character gets younger with time, is also in the running for best film and best director.

Pitt won two nominations -- best actor for Benjamin Button and best supporting actor for his role in the Coen Brothers' comedy Burn After Reading.

Australian actor who died young after an accidental overdose of prescription pills, Heath Ledger is nominated for a supporting actor BAFTA for The Dark Knight, after he won the same category at the Golden Globes.

Ledger was a favourite with fans and won the Golden Globe posthumously. He died last year aged 28 in year 2008.

Kate Winslet is competing against herself in the best actress category for The Reader and Revolutionary Road, and is up against Angelina Jolie for her performance in Changeling.
