Chhaava, the historical drama based on the life of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and starring Vicky Kaushal, has been one of the most discussed films in recent times. The film draws heavily from history, emotion, and identity, presenting the journey of a celebrated figure who continues to hold deep cultural significance, especially among the Maratha community. Since its release, Chhaava has sparked conversations not only for its narrative and performances but also for the larger themes it touches upon.
Amid ongoing conversations around cinema and social narratives, AR Rahman recently shared his views on the film and the current state of the film industry during an interview with BBC Asian Network. When asked about composing music for Chhaava, the Oscar winning composer addressed the tone and positioning of the film. Rahman said, “It is a divisive film. I think it cashed in on divisiveness, but I think the core of it is to show bravery.” He acknowledged that while the film operates within a divided environment, its central focus remains on highlighting courage.
Rahman also spoke about his initial hesitation before taking up the project. Recalling his interaction with the filmmaker, he said, “I had asked the director, why did he need me for this film, but he said that ‘we need only you for this’.” Talking further about audience perception and influence, Rahman added, “It is an enjoyable film, but definitely people are smarter than that. Do you think people are going to get influenced by movies? They have something called internal conscience, which knows what the truth is, and what manipulation is.”

The composer then reflected on the historical and emotional weight of the character portrayed in Chhaava. Speaking about Sambhaji Maharaj’s significance, Rahman said, “Chhaava is the most celebrated character. It is like the blood of every Maratha.” He also highlighted a moment from the film that stood out to him emotionally, stating, “Once the film finishes, you see the girl saying beautiful poetry. It’s very moving.”
Concluding his thoughts on working on the project, Rahman expressed pride in being associated with the film’s music. He said, “I’m so honoured to have scored that full movie, which has the pulse and soul of every Maratha.” His remarks shed light on both the complexity of the film and the responsibility involved in portraying historically rooted stories through cinema.
