Maulana hassled over Negar's wedding

Abdul Karim Kafiluddin, the maulana who reportedly conducted deported Norwegian model Negar Khan's marriage to Indian actor Sahil Khan in September last year, has sworn he will not conduct any marriages henceforth.

Kafiluddin said the police have caused him tremendous mental trauma with their repeated questioning in the case. He has even had to be treated for stress, he said.

"I never thought I would get into trouble for conducting a marriage. I have now decided I won't conduct any marriages. If at all I change my mind, I will make sure I thoroughly check the antecedents of the people whose marriage I am solemnising. I don't want to get into such trouble again."

Kafiluddin said the cops have visited him three times at his madrassa in Juhu lane, Andheri, to verify the signatures and once even took him to the house of Sahil's friend Mohammed Ismail Khan where the marriage was allegedly solemnised.

"They questioned me before several people who had been present on the day of the marriage. They wanted to verify the signatures before witnesses," said Kafiluddin.

"I don't understand what the problem is, because the marriage was legitimate, with all the necessary witnesses and other things in order," said Kafiluddin.

He said the police were now saying maulanas cannot solemnise marriages and that this was the first-ever marriage he had conducted.

"Maulanas can certainly solemnise marriages under the Shariat law. I have been solemnising marriages since 1996 and have conducted 17 marriages before Negar Khan's. They are all happilymarried with kids."

Kafiluddin runs a madrassa for children from Bihar in a small 225 sq-foot tenement in Juhu Lane, Andheri.
