can-pakistan-ruffle-a-few-feathers-at-the-womens-t20-world-cup-this-year

Pakistan enter yet another World Cup with a new coach at the helm (on some days a consultant, on other days a mentor). Irrespective of what tag is flashed next to Wahab Riaz's name, for yet another change in key personnel, the team comes into the tournament with a rare, refreshing clarity of its gameplay. It is evident in the way they have played their cricket in the lead-up and the bold selection calls they've made to make their line-up more aggressive. However, after bossing against Zimbabwe at home, they turned up second best against West Indies and Ireland recently. There wasn't much to cheer in the warm-up game against Sri Lanka either

The new approach may have not given Pakistan the desired results heading into the World Cup, but if they have to improve on their recent World Cup records - Pakistan haven't won more than one match in a T20 World Cup since 2016 - they will have to trust that clarity. For this, much depends on their captain - not just as a player, but also as a leader to ensure that motivation doesn't fizzle out after a few losses. But the big question itself begins with how best is Fatima Sana's batting creds going to be utilised - in a way that is beneficial to the team while also maximising each individual's potential.

Best XI: Muneeba Ali (wk), Gull Feroza, Ayesha Zafar, Saira Jabeen, Fatima Sana (c), Aliya Riaz, Iram Javed, Rameen Shamim, Diana Baig, Nashra Sandhu, Said Iqbal

Players to keep an eye on:

Fatima Sana:A genuine world-class all-rounder capable of turning the game on its head with the bat and the ball. In recent months, she has shown ample ability to play game-changing roles; since the last T20 World Cup, she has boasted a strike rate of 183.06 with the bat and been the second-highest wicket-taker for the team.

Sadia Iqbal:A smart operator who mixes up her simple variations well, and can bowl in all phases of play. The left-arm spinner has been the highest wicket-taker for the team since the last T20 World Cup. That's merely a stretch from the ever-reliant backbone that she has provided to the team over the last seven years - turning up on good days, and quite often, on bad ones too.

What's in the news:Iram Javed, the 34-year-old hard-hitting batter, has made yet another return to the national team - this time not to provide muscle to an otherwise conservative line-up, but to slot in to the aggressive template of batting.

Where they finished in 2024:With only one win in four games, Pakistan's campaign ended in the group stage.

How have they performed since then: Pakistan have won only 5 of the 12 T20Is since the 2024 World Cup; three of those wins coming against Zimbabwe. During this period, they lost a series each in Ireland and South Africa with the same scoreline 1-2.

The big game: vs South Africa. In the last two years, at home and away, Pakistan have found ways to go past South Africa. If they manage to do it again at the World Cup, it could potentially dictate the fate of the group, and position them for a shot at the semifinal berth.

A landmark in sight: Fatima Sana needs two more wickets to become the 7th Pakistani woman to take 50 T20I wickets.

Realistic expectation: Pakistan would need more than just their best cricket to go past the group stage.

Even in all its glory over the past two years - when they beat England in England and Australia in Australia - India have never looked infallible. The weaknesses and loopholes were obvious even when they didn't quite peep out. In some ways, an in-form Ghosh has the ability to mask some of those weaklinks in the line-up. But it's too much of a burden to shoulder.

Harmanpreet admitted the tough job the young batter is taking the load of, but lauded the mindset she has brought into the team. "Whichever batting position she bats in, to be honest, is the toughest position for any batter. Despite that, she has been handling pressure and performing in almost every game. That shows how mentally strong she is."

After Saturday's triple-header comes the double-header on Sunday. T20 World Cupdebutants Netherlands will start the day against Bangladesh, from 9.30am GMT in Birmingham, where England trounced Sri Lanka on the opening day. Bangladesh will feature in their seventh straight T20 World Cup. They won just one game out of four in the 2024 edition. In the recent tri-series in Scotland, Netherlands beat Bangladesh by eight runs before Bangladesh avenged the loss with a 13-run win over Netherlands. Their overall head-to-head stands at 4-1 in favour of Bangladesh.

In one of the most eagerly awaited contests of the tournament, India will face Pakistan from 1.30pm GMT, also in Birmingham. The rivalry, however, is one-sided as ODI champions India lead the head-to-head 6-2 in T20 World Cups and 13-3 in T20Is overall. There will be immense pressure on both sides to start well in what's being termed the group of death.
