THE LITERARY LOOTERS

I was actually taken aback by the BIPOC and pluz-size rep, I really thought this was gonna be another super generic contemporary romance series (which is fine ofc, but sometimes I like to see minorities be represented in popular media ya know).

I’m on a roll this month. Without wanting to jinx it, reading The Rom-commers by Katharine Center and just finished The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden.

I finished The Ex. You're right the twist was meh. But that's Freida for you. She's quite predictable - you can bet the heroine will have a nagging mother and will be TSTL, the guy will be cute, great bod, with blue eyes., sometime dimples, and clueless AF, and then we'll get unreliable narration, which is half the twist. smiley36 But still, her books are quick reads and entertaining - so I keep going back to them, even if I'm eye-rolling half the time!

Oh finally you read it. The ex chapters were actually good and intriguing until that dumb revelation had us rolling our eyes.smiley36 It got predictable even before it was revealed actually.

One thing I noticed is one of the MCs in her books is always a doctor/surgeonsmiley36

Well she’s a doctor herself so she usually puts in some medical related stuff in every book but I’ve read a few by her with MCs not in the medical field - like The Crash or the Teacher, even The Surrogate Mother & The Housemaid series

Hello everyone, well I am kinda new here. But I have just started reading the vegitarian by Han kang and it has me hooked from first page itself. The way we see our main character through her husband's not so flattering pov is making my skin crawl yet i can't stop reading it.

Karin Slaughter's The Good Daughter

It is a good thriller book set in the small town of Georgia (Karin likes Georgia a lot I guess smiley36) focusing on the Quinn sisters—Charlie and Sam. Daughters of eccentric geniuses Rusty and Gamma, their lives are irrevocably altered by a traumatic event that continues to haunt them.

Slaughter's portrayal of violence against female characters, particularly the leads, has always been intense yet not gratuitous, though some readers may find certain scenes heavy, so you’re cautioned to read the trigger warnings carefully.

The transitions between past and present is good IMo, though I wished for more of Sam's perspective in the current timeline. smiley44

Charlie is always in focus as she’s the titular good daughter. While I didn't particularly like her, I tried to understand her motivations and why she is, the way she is .smiley36

The main murder suspense is well-crafted, IMO the mystery behind past incident and the new murder situation was balanced effectively.

Has multiple characters and victims, so won’t comment on all smiley36.

Initially, I didn't think I'd like Rusty, but by the end, I found myself lil’ growing fond of him. He was a good father smiley36.

Charlie's relationship with her husband felt lacking in genuine affection, especially given his affair with that young side chick . smiley39

I found the chemistry between Charlie's father and deceased mother more compelling than Charlie and Ben, but I don’t really care about her love life that much so..okay.. whatever smiley36

I personally liked the glimpses into her parents' eccentric ways smiley36 I would have read a book on Rusty and Gamma’s story tbh smiley36

Overall I’ll give it 3.5/5 smiley36
