Nupur Sanon hits back at trolls after Kangana Ranaut criticises sister Kriti’s Raksha Bandhan ad

Nupur Sanon has come out in support of her sister Kriti Sanon after the actor faced criticism over her latest Raksha Bandhan advertisement. The commercial sparked debate online over Kriti’s outfit and her decision to include her pets in the festival tradition.

Kriti recently addressed the backlash through an Instagram statement, arguing that festivals should not be reduced to judgments about a woman’s clothing. Nupur subsequently shared her sister’s post on her Instagram Stories and responded to those criticising the advertisement.

Sharing Kriti’s statement, Nupur wrote, “Imagine being this bothered by what another woman chooses to wear. Respectfully EVOLVE!”

She then directly addressed those objecting to the way Raksha Bandhan was portrayed in the advertisement. “I'm the one she ties the rakhi to, and if I don't have a problem, why do you?” Nupur wrote.

Kriti had earlier explained her perspective, saying, “The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear, it is in the emotions and meaning you hold for the traditions. Rakshabandhan is a bond of protection. My sister and I tie rakhi to each other. We know we can protect each other no less than a brother would have. We pray for each other's health, happiness & long life.”

She also defended including their dogs in the tradition, saying, “And for us, this prayer and promise extends to our dogs too! Afterall, they are family!” Kriti further questioned the focus on women’s clothing during festivals, stating, “Culture & Traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!”

What sparked the controversy?

The backlash followed Kriti’s appearance in a GIVA jewellery advertisement. She is seen wearing a bralette style blouse with a cape and draped skirt while tying a rakhi to her onscreen brother.

Some social media users criticised the styling and called it inappropriate for Raksha Bandhan. Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also commented on the controversy, questioning why Kriti would wear such an outfit for the occasion.

The advertisement has since triggered a wider discussion about clothing, cultural expectations and how women are judged during festivals.
