Karin Slaughter's The Good Daughter
It is a good thriller book set in the small town of Georgia (Karin likes Georgia a lot I guess
) focusing on the Quinn sisters—Charlie and Sam. Daughters of eccentric geniuses Rusty and Gamma, their lives are irrevocably altered by a traumatic event that continues to haunt them.
Slaughter's portrayal of violence against female characters, particularly the leads, has always been intense yet not gratuitous, though some readers may find certain scenes heavy, so you’re cautioned to read the trigger warnings carefully.
The transitions between past and present is good IMo, though I wished for more of Sam's perspective in the current timeline.
Charlie is always in focus as she’s the titular good daughter. While I didn't particularly like her, I tried to understand her motivations and why she is, the way she is .
The main murder suspense is well-crafted, IMO the mystery behind past incident and the new murder situation was balanced effectively.
Has multiple characters and victims, so won’t comment on all
.
Initially, I didn't think I'd like Rusty, but by the end, I found myself lil’ growing fond of him. He was a good father
.
Charlie's relationship with her husband felt lacking in genuine affection, especially given his affair with that young side chick .
I found the chemistry between Charlie's father and deceased mother more compelling than Charlie and Ben, but I don’t really care about her love life that much so..okay.. whatever
I personally liked the glimpses into her parents' eccentric ways
I would have read a book on Rusty and Gamma’s story tbh
Overall I’ll give it 3.5/5
