I did not expect Trump to have manners. Vance was rude too. I feel sorry for Zelensky.

I understand bilateral talks failing and diplomatic sessions falling through but why in the heck was this televised for the entire world to see like some tamasha version of a cheap reality show by Ekta Kapoor? The public did not need to see what happened behind doors. Which makes me think all this was an elaborate ruse by the Trump administration (idk if Zelensky consented to it). I've been hearing that the Russian media was in on it too. Zelensky went and had a meeting with EU leaders after this. Did we see that televised?

May be Trump wanted to end financing Ukrain.

Biden too after coming in power, got out of Afghanistan.

In my view both are at fault and here's why. Both went into the meeting knowing Putin well and trying to manipulate the situation to their advantage.

Zelensky knows that Putin will not just back off because he and Trump "agreed" to it. Putin is looking for the return of the USSR. Most other countries will fall easily, but not Ukraine. He needs to take Ukraine down to make the other countries fall. And Zelensky cannot fight Russia forever without American support because the US has a huge defense budget and army. So Zelensky needs some sort of guarantee so that when Putin does come back, Zelensky and Ukraine can continue fighting.

Trump also knows that Putin will not just back off. He never went in for an agreement on making Putin back off. He went in with the intention of just getting enough time so that he can get Ukraine's rare minerals and then Putin could go back and do what he wants. He also has no intention of supporting Ukraine for the long-term so for him the only important thing was gaining Zelensky's support for the rare minerals.

Both went into the meeting with their agendas but both are hot-headed men who have huge egos. And it became a game of manipulation. Unfortunately, Zelensky got up-handed because he forgot to account for the puppet, aka Vance. Vance started the attack, but Zelensky got fired up too quickly and even though Trump was also equally at fault (if not more so), Zelensky came out looking ungrateful and rude in this entire interaction.

I'm not saying Zelensky shouldn't have reacted. He should have. Vance and Trump were both in the wrong. But Zelensky reacted at the wrong time. If he waited a bit longer, showed some more patience while Trump also got worked up, and then reacted by walking out the door, Trump would have come out looking like the only wrong person in this entire interaction. His supporters would have had a harder time manipulating the situation (which they still would have done) and Zelensky could easily have used the entire situation to his advantage even further.

Thanks to this interaction though, we are that much closer to World War 3. Thanks to this interaction, China can now plan on overthrowing Taiwan a bit more. Pakistan and India may go to war yet again, the Middle East is mostly at war anyways, many countries in Africa are just on the wall in terms of peace, and Trump is anyways after Canada and Greenland. And we have Western Europe in the entire mix who will now have to pick sides and choose who to support.

As a millenial, I can now tell future generations that I have seen it all - a recession, an idiot President, a couple of civil wars, and World War 3. History repeating itself.

Very good analysis, Shreya. smiley32 Unless foreign policy directly affects them, such as by raising the price of gasoline or eggs or inciting unrest in many USA states, the majority of Americans don't give it much thought or care, while voting!!

In the USA, presidents have extraordinary power and discretion to engage in foreign relations in ways they see fit, and benificial for them.

Donald Trump, is all too aware of this. He has used foreign policy as a weapon during his second term to establish himself as a leader who can impose conditions on both allies and adversaries and come out on top. Consider his bombastic claims to have taken over Gaza, purchased Greenland, and renamed the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America. Although his tariff threats against China, Canada, and Mexico might have short-term benefits, American consumers and businesses will undoubtedly pay a higher price in the long run. What matters most to Trump is claiming success, promoting his brand, and parading on the global stage with a stern stance!!

With U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance luring Zelensky into what appeared to be a planned ambush, and with Zelensky taking the bait by pushing back against the false narrative of Russian President Vladimir Putin abiding by his agreements, failing to understand the trap, and deciding not to play the role of grateful aid recipient, Trump was able to enthral his base with his bluster and the nonsensical focus on perceived disrespect for the “cherished” Oval Office.

It’s been clear that Trump can’t stand Zelensky and has nothing but contempt, derision, and bad associations about Ukraine from his first impeachment. It should have been no surprise that Trump’s reaction to the recent meeting was that it would make great television show. Indeed, Trump has no capacity to turn the “m” in me upside down to a “w” in we.

This disastrous meeting represented only a headline or a trend line, that is immaterial to the world. Just three days after the confrontation, Trump suspended military aid to Ukraine, including more than $1 billion in arms and ammunition already ordered, and Putin attacked Ukraine at night and a few thousands of civilians perished, a vast human tragedy!smiley19

It’s definitely shaping up to be a high-stakes confrontation. Zelensky has held his ground in tough situations before, but facing Trump and Vance together will be a challenge. Curious to see how this plays out and what impact it has on U.S.-Ukraine relations.

We hope he really knows what he's doing, and isn't Canada also a NATO member?
