Every now and then a debate crops up about the pay scale discrimination between men and women in the industry. Your thoughts about this ongoing issue?

In any profession, one needs to earn it to be paid more. Heroes are paid more because they have a lot to lose. A lot of films ride on their shoulders and I think they deserve better pay scale. Instead of fighting for better pay scale, why not write better stories for women and showcase them in stronger roles.

This is from 2018. Although I do not agree with it completely, I feel she has zeroed in on the main problem here. Women lack better roles which invariably puts them at disadvantage wrt pay. Which producer would shell money for a flowerpot role that can be played by any top 10 actresses atm. Male actors have movies riding on their shoulders because they have solid market base with the kind of roles they get to play. They are never relegated to a sideling. On the same note, actresses cannot demand for higher pay while doing a song and dance, because the producer can very well dump said actress and go for a 100 other waiting for chances. In movie industry it all boils down to building a market and making a mark to the extent that if/when they are replaced, the producer can feel a dent in their profits, mor so in South where hero worship is to an unimaginable level and gross.
