Mujhse Dosti Karoge! was one of my favorite films growing up. If I remember correctly, it was a flop and not much liked by the critics or the public and I was just wondering why.
I watched this movie again, today, after very long and decided to assess it with a fresh mindset. While there are many movies I have grown out of loving as I grew up (Kuch kuch hota hai, dil to pagal hai, even jab we met to some extent), this one still pulls me in!
This is what I like about the movie-
1. Even though problematic, the movie does capture a very real problem of youth getting more attracted to loos than real compatibility. I mean, no matter how much we say its wrong, I have seen people chasing girls, who were considered "beautiful", and ignoring those who were either a little dark skinned or fat or short etc. I feel the movie beautifully captures that Raj, despite saying he will instantly recognize the girl who writes to him, just walks past Pooja and goes straight to Tina...and he keeps insisting that what makes their love perfect is that Tina is so beautiful so No, I don't blame Pooja for hiding the fact that it was she who wrote those letters
2. Raj does eventually come around, but it is indeed too late..even if Tina's father hadn't died, Raj has done full blown romance and ILU with Tina in India to simply easily back off later...so yes, Pooja was right in deciding to not pursue their love further since its too late now..
3. The love, the friendship, the angst is beautifully shown and is enhanced by great dialogues and awesome acting by both Hritik and Rani...Kareena, as usual, is a little irritating in the beginning but she also does evolve into a better person as the movie progresses...
So, all in all, I found the plot reasonable, dialogues great, acting amazing, songs lovely. Also, kudos to Rani for agreeing to do this movie and letting herself be portrayed as a "not-so-good-looking" girl despite being an establish actress. I can't think of any established actress in today's generation actually accepting a role like this..same goes for Kajol for KKHH but at least Kajol is shown to "get beautiful" (eye rolls) eventually in KKHH while here the theme is totally that love should happen from heart and not just based on looks..
Anyway, is there anyone out here who also loves this movie? I am also curious to know why people don't seem to like it?
