I had a neighbor growing up. Johnson uncle from Kerala. He and his wife didn’t know Hindi or Gujarati. We didn’t know English. Yet we all co-existed and are good friend to this day.
We Gujaratis never made anyone feel less welcomed or awkward for not knowing Gujarati. In fact a Gujarati will go out their way to be a good host.
The only problem is our sweet daal. Par kya kare sweet logo ki daal bhi sweet hogi hai na. 😆
P.S. — I am just being Rajamauli. Proud of where I belong from. 😃

Why aim for a NATIONAL language in India - that doesn't make sense in a country with many prominent native languages.
Look at the tiny Switzerland...they have four regions with four different native languages (German, French, Italian and Grison) and DON'T HAVE a national language!
At school, the first language the kids are trained in, is their native language (in the German speaking part it is standard German, not the Swiss dialect!)... then they have options to learn one or more of the other languages and - of course - English. There is a must of certain languages for different higher education.
That could be done in India, too! First schooling in the native language (not dialect!), then a first foreign language already starting in primary school - best would be English (it has become THE world language... bugger the fact that the colonists spoke English...look at the positive they brought!)...then the choice to learn other Indian languages.
There is NO Indian language like there is NO Swiss language...so what!!! But there is India and Indians and there is Switzerland and Swiss!
If only India would get a government with a PRACTICAL sense!!!

This is very courteous of you. But I'd be very upset in your place if Johnson got miffed about his maid or driver speaking Gujarati or Hindi instead of English or Malayalam. He moved there. It's on him to learn to communicate.
In case people have trouble learning three languages, I remember Tejasvi Surya had once proposed to learn five languages. Humse teen na padhe gaye. 😆 Just saying.
There is a solution for problems of communication: signs and patience and learning from the other...

Do you mean sign language should be made a national language? I think that would be good. speak less and create lesser problems.😆
