Hero worship is probably here to stay until new superstars come. Earlier when films of huge stars like Rajesh Khanna, Big B, Jeetu, Mithun, Anil were flopping, then also people said maybe hero worship or superstar era is over and audience will focus on only content.
Then slowly Khans build stardom and it became about Ace, King, Bhai again.
Bollywood is seeing cyclical slump which comes every 25 years when old stars get old or jaded or predictable and audience is tired of them and new ones are yet to make mark.
Films that have recently done well are not that awesome on content IMO. Pushpa, KGF are masala flicks. They are not some high quality content. Success of Gangubai, Sooryavanshi and Brahmastra proves star system does work. Alia and Ranbir marriage hype helped Brahmastra a lot. Alia did carry Gangubai on shoulders.
If stars do some grand or entertaining or masala film that clicks, they will find audience. I saw Sooryavanshi on TV and I could guess why it worked. Quite relevant in theme of current events and proper masala film.
Or the film needs to have REALLY good or inspiring content like, say, Lagaan or TZP or Munnabhai MBBS, CDI had at some point, which makes audience rave about it.
Amitabh is also a superstar and he does deserve credit for success of Unchai or earlier Baghban. He brings greater visibility to projects compared to other seniors. Gotta credit him fot working at this age too and still being a viable bet at BO for his age.
