Not 3 Cr being audience being back. The market just isn't there for anything but spectacles anymore. 😆
How this movie is running houseful
Cool.
The likes of KJo need to learn a few lessons, which - surprise, surprise - Sooraj Barjatya seems to have learned already.
1. It's not about the spectacle. It's about telling an entertaining story.
2. It's not about the stars. It's about telling an entertaining story.
3. It's not about the splashy openings. It's about telling an entertaining story.
4. It's not about disgusting PR tactics and running rivals down. It's about telling an entertaining story.
5. You may get away with some of the above tricks some of the time, but you won't get away with it all the time.
Unchai seems to have a good cast. Amitabh, Danny, Boman, Anupam, Neena. Actors are good and there is probably a theme of older people living life to fullest, which seems to be uplifting.
Content is more important than fancy sets or skin show or lame VFX.

All of these things used to work pre-pandemic.
Pandemic has changed the world. It is a mixed bag , some long lasting negative impacts but I see positives are also there to stay. It has made people less shallow I believe. People no longer get swayed by glitter , they have started appreciating content over non sensical superstar worship. Audience has finally come to their senses. And I credit pandemic for it.

Honestly people blame the pandemic all the time for the recent demise of Bollywood but what a pleasant change to see the demise of hero worship in Bollywood. Movies used to run purely on names. “Bhai ka film hai, opening dekhna”, whereas people are much more selective about actual good content movies now. It’s a welcome change. In 2022, can anyone think of a movie that failed this year that deserved to be a hit? So why the constant crying by people here?
content is king the movie looks good
I do thing the distribution tactic is too old fashioned
Hero worship is probably here to stay until new superstars come. Earlier when films of huge stars like Rajesh Khanna, Big B, Jeetu, Mithun, Anil were flopping, then also people said maybe hero worship or superstar era is over and audience will focus on only content.
Then slowly Khans build stardom and it became about Ace, King, Bhai again.
Bollywood is seeing cyclical slump which comes every 25 years when old stars get old or jaded or predictable and audience is tired of them and new ones are yet to make mark.
Films that have recently done well are not that awesome on content IMO. Pushpa, KGF are masala flicks. They are not some high quality content. Success of Gangubai, Sooryavanshi and Brahmastra proves star system does work. Alia and Ranbir marriage hype helped Brahmastra a lot. Alia did carry Gangubai on shoulders.
If stars do some grand or entertaining or masala film that clicks, they will find audience. I saw Sooryavanshi on TV and I could guess why it worked. Quite relevant in theme of current events and proper masala film.
Or the film needs to have REALLY good or inspiring content like, say, Lagaan or TZP or Munnabhai MBBS, CDI had at some point, which makes audience rave about it.
Amitabh is also a superstar and he does deserve credit for success of Unchai or earlier Baghban. He brings greater visibility to projects compared to other seniors. Gotta credit him fot working at this age too and still being a viable bet at BO for his age.

Disclaimer - haven't seen the movie and don't intend to But I did see the trailer Saiyaara was the very opposite of this— a tender love story...
