because most ppl in other languages did not follow the movie or characters, names itself were complex, unless you are familiar with the book or some tamil history it is tough

not just marketing but even the film does not provide context or introducton, example a simple map showing where the kingdoms are, who are they, it can be through narrative devices too,

like i did nor realise the pandyas were those tribals

why is ponniyin selvan so important, tamil ppl know, but others dont

like ppl who came with me were asking if vikram is ponniyin selvan because he is the hero😆

most do not know that arulzhmoli and ps are same or he is raja raja chola which is why the story is so interesting

it is like making of the gandhi, if you dont know who gandhi became why will you will be interested in his journey or beginning

Yeah, perhaps.

I’m non Tamilian but read up on the characters a little bit before watching the film. But my friends who accompanied me - oh boy ! Their reactions were priceless. Tye questions I was bombarded with were downright hilarious. 😆
Agree about the part about a narrator, at least for the Hindi version. I hope Mani takes that into account.

By over promoting and increasing expectations it would just gotten negative responses. By releasing it on a smaller scale it's reaching and being liked by the city going/class audience more. They have also sold the Hindi at a very low price, it should be profitable in a week

I think they could have tweaked the Hindi version slightly by giving that 5 minute intro about the characters by drawing up a family chart etc - that would have made it easier for people to understand. They could have contextualized it more to Hindi audiences by giving easier names to characters instead of the Tamil names. Edited out some songs like Devaralan attam (it was too strong for a north Indian audience).

It could have easily grossed 100 cr in Hindi by making these small tweaks... but Mani may not have been in favour of that because the subject matter is close to him. Anyway, just my two cents on this topic.

The Tamil dubbed film Ponniyan Selvan Part 1 held up well in Hindi as it collected around 1.40 crore nett on Monday with a drop of just 25% from the first day. The collections are low but the film is holding well at these low levels aided by Durga Puja in the East

The all India collections of the film were around 31.25 crore nett on day one and second day is 29 crore nett and Sunday was 32.25 crore nett for a three day weekend total of 92.50 crore nett. Monday has collected 17.75 crore nett for a four day total of 110 crore nett plus. The collections Ponniyan Selvan Part1 in Hindi are as follows.

Sunday - 3,25,00,000 apprx

The film had a huge hold in Tamil Nadu as it dropped around 30% from the first day. The total collections in Tamil Nadu are 65 crore nett and the record grosser in this circuit is Vikram at 140 crore apprx and that record could be chased down. The collections in Tamil Nadu are as follows.

Maybe a chart. But if film is well made, it won't need to rely on such.

Secondly, absolutely zero need to change names. If people can learn what Thor is, they can darned well learn a few names from their own country. Moreover, it's not a contemporary story.

PS1 is not doing too well in Telugu states and Hindi belt. If they wanted non Tamil audiences to appreciate the story they should have have given a proper introduction to the character and background of the story at the beginning.

The budget of both PS1 and PS2 is going to be recovered just from PS1 business alone. Next level blockbuster business!!

Telugu version will also recover the money the distributor spent in buying it and make a few profits (it was sold at a low price of 10 crores).
