Loved Vikram in Kapil’s show. I thought it would be awkward for the 3 heroes to be on that show, but they were super sweet in that show.

They could understand the hindi jokes and respond with better jokes. No air about their superstardom specially Vikram.

Vikram is the only legit superstar in that cast ( Ash aside ). Karthi is also a fairly big name with a lot of critical acclaim. The others not so much.
Vikram has zero airs or starry tantrums. Very very down to earth. He sounds so calm and soothing in his interviews , almost therapeutic lol.

Maybe a chart. But if film is well made, it won't need to rely on such.

Secondly, absolutely zero need to change names. If people can learn what Thor is, they can darned well learn a few names from their own country. Moreover, it's not a contemporary story.

i agree chart will help to give context of the geography but narrative devices could have set it up better, the problem is not marketing but even ppl who are interested in history and watch attentively will find it difficult

example: only sarat kumar's character, position, he is married to a younger woman is set up well, karthi is actually ruler of a petty kingdom which is no more but he says he is just a soldier fighting alongside vikram now, this fact comes up when aishwariya offers him his kingdom back much later and is confusing because he behaves like a soldier till then. main ps is arul mozhi is raja raja chola is not clear, the whole importance of this piece of fiction is afaik is that it gives context fictionally to a missing piece of history, how raja raja chola ascended the throne, but for that you need to build him first, the screenplay should have introduced his earlier maybe. even the pandya part as we discussed

Man VV crashed hard. I am surprised. Anything else releasing this Friday ?

I know people who went for PS 1 again because it’s the kind you appreciate watching a second or third time. Typical Mani Ratnam stuff. Maybe they should consider slashing ticket prices for the Hindi belt specifically.

I am Tamil and haven't read the book. Have heard so much about the book from my dad who is an ardent fan of the novel.

I did read up on the cast of characters before watching and that helped me a great deal in understanding the flow of events. It also helps that historical fiction is one of my favorite genres- the grandness of the setting and the characters, the archetypes, and the theme of vying for power and palace intrigue, etc,.

Honestly Mani Ratnam has done such a fabulous job of condensing such a dense novel into two parts- I was swept away by the story arc as Vandiyathevan traverses the Chola terrain and comes across a diverse set of characters who intrigue you with their aspirations/shadowy pasts/allegiances/rivalries. It is worlds apart from Bahubali, which I liked as well.

Bahubali sets upon our identification with the characters as based upon the Ramayana/Mahabharata- Devsena is like a mix of Sita and Draupadi, Amarendra is an offshoot of Lord Rama with his allegiance to duty, nobility, etc,.

But this novel has a broader canvas and has a huge, sweeping ensemble of characters- you are meant to immerse in their world and figure out with bated breath where the story goes next. I am sure the book fans would have had a whale of a time seeing their imagination transposed on to the screen, but it also gave me, a non-reader- a grand time as well.

But I can also figure out the frustration of some viewers who weren't able to follow thoroughly- maybe our attention spans have totally decreased, and we have been attuned to what a Twitter fan described as "cocaine masala movies" that have us constantly on a rush with awww shucks moments. It also didn't help that the screenplay was shaky in terms of the transitions from one plot point to another at times.

Despite that- if anything, the movie made me read up on the novel, and it is just a thrilling complement to what I watched on screen (I am reading the English translation since my Tamil isn't that adequate, sadly). I am totally up for Part 2 which will be one of the movies to look out for in 2023!

I dont think Abhishek is against Aishwerya working, he comes across as really well read man with a modern thinking. When he had married her, he knew that she is a bigger star than he will ever be.
