I am Tamil and haven't read the book. Have heard so much about the book from my dad who is an ardent fan of the novel.
I did read up on the cast of characters before watching and that helped me a great deal in understanding the flow of events. It also helps that historical fiction is one of my favorite genres- the grandness of the setting and the characters, the archetypes, and the theme of vying for power and palace intrigue, etc,.
Honestly Mani Ratnam has done such a fabulous job of condensing such a dense novel into two parts- I was swept away by the story arc as Vandiyathevan traverses the Chola terrain and comes across a diverse set of characters who intrigue you with their aspirations/shadowy pasts/allegiances/rivalries. It is worlds apart from Bahubali, which I liked as well.
Bahubali sets upon our identification with the characters as based upon the Ramayana/Mahabharata- Devsena is like a mix of Sita and Draupadi, Amarendra is an offshoot of Lord Rama with his allegiance to duty, nobility, etc,.
But this novel has a broader canvas and has a huge, sweeping ensemble of characters- you are meant to immerse in their world and figure out with bated breath where the story goes next. I am sure the book fans would have had a whale of a time seeing their imagination transposed on to the screen, but it also gave me, a non-reader- a grand time as well.
But I can also figure out the frustration of some viewers who weren't able to follow thoroughly- maybe our attention spans have totally decreased, and we have been attuned to what a Twitter fan described as "cocaine masala movies" that have us constantly on a rush with awww shucks moments. It also didn't help that the screenplay was shaky in terms of the transitions from one plot point to another at times.
Despite that- if anything, the movie made me read up on the novel, and it is just a thrilling complement to what I watched on screen (I am reading the English translation since my Tamil isn't that adequate, sadly). I am totally up for Part 2 which will be one of the movies to look out for in 2023!
