Telugu films have a long history of mythological and historical films more than other South Indian languages too

Malayalam never so much and Tamil was more in past except PS1 now

Maya bazar is considered one of the greatest movies of all time

Every telugu filmmaker draws inspiration from it

All possible stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata, fantasies like paatla bhairavi, bhariva dweepam to a ammoru ( watch this one it by director of arundhati, Ramya is the goddess, cult movie) have been made over the years

It is considered a feather in the cap of the actors of they can carry off a historical or mythological role which require heavy duty dialogue delivery. They have reference points on how to do them.

Jr ntr’s debut was bala Ramayanam, a kids version, he plays Yama in rajamouli’s Yamadonga and has one heavy duty dialogue which is super popular

I have heard Rana recite a whole dialogue from the old karna movie about caste and his birth

What I am saying is they grow watching these movies and imbibe them, it is not overnight

Most bw actors grow up speaking English in sobo culture and are clueless about Hindi films leave anything else

They have 6 pack and designer clothes when playing middle class characters, they have polished themselves to such an extent that they can’t fit into what the role demands

Lagan had all actual actors with good theater background who fitted in, lot of cafe was taken in casting

There are actors like that in stage and tv but they are not cast

Dialogue delivery is very important for these movies and they are mostly incapable

Can you see anybody doing a Mughal e Azam, jai santoshi maa or a even a chitchor

Bw long lost its ability to make these kind of movies and they no longer have the actors to do them or writers to write them

Only marathi and gujarati actors can carry off to certain extent and slb, gowariker and even om raut use them in supporting roles

Bollywood actors since 80s are mostly crap.

I cannot imagine any of them in Meerabai doing roles of Hema and Vinod or even doing justice to a medieval fantasy like Alibaba 40 chor or Ajooba. Forget historicals.

I agree these guys are so out of touch that they do not fit middle class or small town roles either, forget villager or historical roles. They use artificial brown face to look like common man.

All are wannabe metropolitan elites or NRI types.

Playing god or goddess is out of question.

I can at the most imagine Deepika as a goddess due to her big eyes but her dialogue delivery and voice will ruin the role.

agree, mythologicals is long way off

vinod and hema reminds me of lekin, can anybody fit in those roles,

what about mera gaon mera desh, ganga jamuna, total rural movies

in south they can carry gaon type roles easily in all languages

even ayushman, raj kumar have played played max small town delhi types

yes you are correct, it is post 80s and as somebody rightly said it is influx of beauty queens and models, model like looks have become criteria to become top stars in bw today, height, figure, whereas in pre 80s a zeenat aman was a top star but confined to certain roles and there were all types from smita to a hema but models are not great actors in most cases and cant fit most roles where they are force fitted

today a model type will be cast even in a guddi, maine pyar kiya or ankur, where will the impact be there

neither are actors trained in classical dance a la waheeda, hema, vyjayanthimala etc

in a way alia is non model looks type after a long time

South Indian film industry has been making fantasy films and stories based on Ramayan and Mahabharat since black and white era.

Mayabazar which was made in black and white in the early to mid fifties had stunning vfx considering the limited technology available in those times. It also had extraordinary performances from the artistes. It is considered as one of the all time greats of Indian Cinema. It was a huge hit in Telugu Tamil and Malayalam.

People living in the north of Vindhyas didn't have much exposure to south Indian cinema. Now all thanks to satellite TV and OTT all content is available to the people.

Mythological films and socio fantasy and folktales are very popular with Telugu audiences. So a lot of these kind of films were made and are getting made even now.So they have lot more technical expertise and experience in making these films.

Rajamouli's inspiration were these films when he made Magadheera Baahubali.

Not just mythologicals but many period films based on Sarath Chandra Chatterjee's books were also huge hits with Telugus. In fact Devdas was made in Telugu much before Bollywood made it with Dilip Kumar.Sanjay Leela Bansali's Devdas comes nowhere closer to Telugu version of Devdas.

Was Rana a big star in Tollywood when he was cast for BB ? Or Ram charan for Magadheera ? I don’t think so. I have limited knowledge about other industries so I could be wrong. But I doubt Bollywood would ever make something on such a large scale with lesser known actors. Bollywood in general plays safe so Pretty certain a Bollywoodized Bahubali will star HR and Ranveer as Amarendra Bahubali and Bhaladeva respectively. I understand the business aspect of it but This is why you see stars and not characters. Padmavat was initially offered to Vicky but the studios didn’t have enough faith in his star power so they ended up replacing him with shahid who was a complete misfit for the role.

exactly, telugus had great regard for bengali literature and lot of classic movies were adapted from there

but hindi also had bengali greats like bimal roy, hrishikesh mukherjee, basu chatterjee etc but now it is no longer there

yes, the telugu devdas is the best, it is said that even dilip kumar said there is only one devdas and that is ANR

https://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-andhrapradesh/anrs-devadas-still-rings-a-bell-in-west-bengal/article5608212.ece

the dilip kumar version is a classic but the srk one is slb gloss and gaudy sets added to the story, nothing original except that screeching, overacting by kiron kher still gives me nightmares, the only scene which stands out is the climax which when I went back and watched the dilip kumar version found out is entirely copied from it

unfortunately most audience nowadays dont know these classics and consider the mediocrity churned out nowadays as great

I hope OTT revives, colorises old classics in all languages

true, Rana was a second level star

I think proper casting also happens when director becomes a bigger star than the stars themselves,

now in BW I am not sure there is any filmmaker like that, so the same 6-8 names Ranbir, Ranveer, Deepika, Alia with a kiara, krithi, karthik among others thrown in will be doing all roles whether they suit or not

Vicky and Deepika would have looked great together! And yes, he was a much better fit !
