It’s not about being relevant TODAY. I’m talking on a whole Level and Karishma beats Shilpa, Raveena by miles in this department as she is clearly the bigger star. Alot of past actors aren’t active today that doesn’t make them irrelevant, they still holds a legacy which Karishma has but Shilpa, Raveena don’t. 😆

People looooved her pairing with SRK and they thought it was amazing, that's why Kajol got many hits with him...

You might disagree but their pairing was loved by audience

She also had non srk hits like dillagi, pyar to hona hi tha, hum aapke dil main rehte hai (very diff role for her)

She used to say that acting was just a hobby for her and gave the impression she wasn't ambitious at all

And her complexion was fine, she was dusky but not uneven...

It's timing. Things were much easier for Kareena.

When Karishma was working, Dharma was a nobody and didn't make any big movies or at the frequency they did from mid-2000s onwards. Karan was a new director and it just so happened that his first film worked. It could have easily bombed too.

YRF was a huge PH but also only made a few movies. In the whole 90s, they only made like 6 films, in which Yash Chopra himself directed Karishma and she won a National Award for it. So all this hullaboo that she didn't get movies from them is silly. Kajol technically got bigger movies on paper in the 90s from YRF/Dharma, it happened that they were huge successes but they were all with newbies. Karishma worked with the biggest YC himself.

Salman loved Karisma so much, why didn't he make any movies afterwards with her? He is constantly casting people as favors.

Exactly, SRK and Kajol made Dharma. Karishma got to work with the biggest of directors in big movies. Her songs could be heard around every corner, but as an actor she was very limited. People loved SRK-Kajol from their first movie and Kajol was one of the most popular actors despite her complexion, known for her acting. She was not snatching roles from anyone. Infact she rejected many big movies and got married at her peak. How people think Karishma is some amazing actress who had to overcome huge tragedies in life to get some success is beyond me. She always had movies with big directors opposite big actors, she just never progressed into mature roles. Even later when she tried, she was just average. Give today's Kareena any of those roles and she will knock it out of the park. Kareena can play any role from glamorous to serious with ease now.

With Kareena, I agree she didn't have to face too much competition and she was given huge number of chances but she did learn and grew with every film, that's the only reason where other actresses struggled Kareena didn't. She is such a joy to watch onscreen nowadays, don't think I can ever say that about Karishma, she was always too OTT.

Dharma cannot be called nobody. They worked with biggest stars like Amitabh, Zeenat, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun in films like Dostana, Agneepath etc.

Dharma was not as huge as it is now but it cannot be called nobody either.

Lulz. Karishma never progressed to mature roles? What were Zubeida, Rishtey, Fiza, Shakti etc then?

Karishma won National award.

She was OTT, yes. But to say she never improved or did mature roles is wrong.

Kajol did not snatch roles. She only got favours on a platter. Like Alia gets now. Kajol had no struggle at all.

All the roles you mentioned came very late in her career....that's what i was referring to...and there was no dearth of conventionally beautiful and talented actresses in 90's....even Aish was starting out and got most of the movies just becoz she was Miss World and exceptionally beautiful, most producers didn't have much to gain handing Kajol "roles on a platter", they offered roles to the actors who could make them money. Kjo curated Alia's career hyping her and lobbying for her everywhere. He himself was not a big name when Kajol was a huge star herself. This obsession of comparing Kajol to Alia and even Madhuri to Alia often feels like useless attempts to degrade the stardoms and craze these amazing actresses had and generated.

@bold:agree with this, but the audience loved and accepted her too. Like I said there was no reason for Producers and directors to cast her repeatedly if not for the star value she brought especially when most of the roles were flowerpot or glamour roles written for actresses in the era.
