Here's Mee raat taakli. I heard this song soo much growing up and always thought it was from Umbartha. I have seen both movies too, back in the day when they used to show regional movies on DD.

Very interesting facts which I heard first time!

Reposting this here from the GA thread, with due respect, acknowledging the original post written by atominis .

Lata ji is also the original feminist icon when the word feminism was not even known in India.

When journalists asked her if she regretted not being married or having kids or Prabhu Chawla shamelessly said 'you did a lot for music and society but did nothing for yourself as you did not get married and every woman wants her own family' - Lata ji replied saying she was too busy and had no time to think for such things and she already did have her family, her siblings and parents were her family, and reiterated she was happy doing her riaz and her work, meditation and social work and felt no regrets.

She was also fond of visiting casinos at Las Vegas and when some Indian journo taunted her and accused her of spoiling image of Indian women by 'gambling', she said she used her own hard earned money and abroad she was free to do whatever she wanted. She'd wear salwar kameez, pants and colourful clothes and do whatever she wanted abroad without bothering about what press said.

And she is the first singer to insist on getting royalties for her songs even at cost of losing work in case producers like Raj Kapoor did not want to give her royalties. Raj Kapoor eventually relented when he saw films would not work without Lata's voice. And she got royalties for her songs.

Lata knew her worth and clearly said she knew the business and demanded the paycheck she deserved. She was never the meek one to settle for whatever she was offered.

Her life is fascinating. She is not only once in a millennium type voice but also a self made, smart, ambitious, professional, tough as nails lady behind the simple, petite frame.

An empire in herself.

Given the outpouring from all nations and across all divides today, it just shows what respect Lata ji earned and commanded. Lata ji is one of biggest epitome of India's soft power and power of music and arts to connect masses across borders.

Lata ji also refused to perform at Filmfare Awards as at that time only music directors were receiving awards. Lataji had a fight with Jaikishan because she refused to perform at Filmfare awards as at that time only music directors were receiving Filmfare awards. Singers and lyricists award categories didn’t exist at that time. 2 years after this fight Filmfare introduced singer and lyricist awards categories.

She stood for her rights and make sure that she got them. Today’s singers are now getting awards and royalties due to her standing up for what singers deserve. Many people call her arrogant but this is always the case when women stand up for their rights.

Madhu I’ve been listening to Mann mein kisi ki preet on loop. Such a beautiful song! ❤️

Thank you for posting this!

Anilda gave some great songs to Lata and in the interview Mousy posted she confesses she learned how to ‘fade in fade out’ and hold her breath and inhale - all these tricks of the trade from Anilda!

Priya , wahh what a treat .. listening to these songs.Ek se badhkar ek! 👏

It's a trip down memory lane that takes us to far-away places from which we'd rather not return to this mundane world!

In his first meeting with that young girl, --"I felt her voice was not yet 'ripe' for my style of music," said Naushad, the perfectionist. He was trying to justify not giving her an early break. "To improve her diction and control over words, I advised her to learn and practice Urdu, which she did ... and finally, she was ready to record for me."

Lata grasped the maestro's advice and got her first major hit -- 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949) -- composed by her mentor Naushad. With it, she 'arrived' in the film industry.

Lata's singing style matured under master music directors, her voice helped heroines who acted or danced to her tunes catapult to stardom, such as Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Ameeta, Beena Rai, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Tanuja, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Nutan, Saira Bano, Sadhana etc.

Except that Bindiya chamkegi, all other songs are my favs.

Jaidev

I'm having to post 60s songs here because Jaidev came into his own only in the 60s. Until then he was SDB's assistant.

Prabhu tero naam - Hum Dono (1961)

I love Allah tero naam of course (who doesn't, it's the quintessential secular bhajan!), but this one has my heart too, and I hope it gets the love it deserves. Lata sings it with so much devotion! 😭

Tere bachpan ko jawani ki dua deti hoon - Mujhe jeene do (1963)

Hauntingly painful, painfully haunting! 😭

Sulag uthi dil ki lagi - Kinare Kinare (1964)
