Abishek Porel arrested in rape case; Woman makes shocking claims against Delhi Capitals cricketer

Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a complaint filed by a young woman, bringing the 23-year-old cricketer into the spotlight for reasons far removed from his career on the cricket field. Porel was taken into custody by police after the Calcutta High Court had directed authorities to proceed with his arrest in the case.

According to a report by ABP Ananda, the arrest took place late Monday night. Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh also confirmed the development to PTI, saying Porel would be produced before a court. The matter was heard again on Tuesday, August 11, when Magra Police informed the Calcutta High Court that the cricketer had been arrested and would be presented before the Chinsurah Court.

What is the case against Abishek Porel?

The case stems from allegations made by a woman who claimed that she was in a relationship with Porel. According to her complaint, the two had discussed marriage and their families were also aware of the relationship. She alleged that the situation changed after she discovered that Porel was involved with other women.

The complaint contains several serious allegations. The woman has accused Porel of having a sexual relationship with her after allegedly promising to marry her. She also claimed that he later threatened to share objectionable photographs, which she described as an attempt to blackmail and intimidate her.

The FIR further alleges that the complainant was confined and denied food during an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026. It claims that she became physically weak and required medical attention. These are allegations made in the complaint and have not been established by a court. A case was registered under 19 sections, with several of the alleged offences being non-bailable.

Why did the Calcutta High Court order his arrest?

The matter reached the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached the court over the police investigation. During an earlier hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed Magra Police to take steps towards arresting Porel.

The court also ordered the police to seize electronic devices, including the mobile phone allegedly in Porel's possession. Authorities were asked to submit a report on the action taken in the case.

Porel has denied the allegations against him. The investigation and subsequent court proceedings will determine how the claims develop.
