Men/Women always lean to the side that provides them materialistic gains.. ignoring the long term consequences of those actions. That is exactly what happened int he case of sati.
The word sati only meant a women who burns herself to death.. derived from the name of shiva's wife.. who killed herself in daksha's court. The hindu scriptures give examples of women committing sati after their husband's death, but it was completely her wish.. no one cld force her... like madri- the second wife of pandu committed sati.. where as kunti- his first wife didn't do it. these action were similar to the action of ranja after heer's death.. or that of juliet after romeo's death.
Hindu scriptures gives equal right to property for women.. ie her parent's property. Along with this, a part of whatever her husband earned also belongs to her in case of his death. Now men/woman are always slaves of greed.. why avoid the wealth when the only action u have to do is remove the dead person's wife from ur path? n what a convinient way u have for that... sati. So a deed that used to symbolise love of a woman to her husband that she preferred death than living without him became a curse for her.
It is similar to the way dowry became a curse to the indian society. According to manu smriti, women have equal right to the property. Father's property is equally distribted to the kids. If it is a daughter, 3/4 of it should be given to her when she gets married and the rest 1/4 after her father's death. THe 3/4 part of the inheritence that she got, later on became a dowry.. which was demanded by the groom's family.
