What I have never understood is for a society that believes in "ghristi" or the spirit of family, why it was never considered an option for a blameless widow to be remarried withthe assistance of her family or biraadhari???

Maybe because as usual, it takes guts to be a woman to do things differently, to raise your sons with different sets of values so they too see women as their equals, with a right to life, and then these sons who make the groundbreaking and innovative decisions in society to make life better for women...because lets face it......it's nearly always men who are in power to make decisions for women. The least we can do is bring them up in a way so it actually benefits women eventually!

Hi... 😊

From wikipedia link you must have got an idea abt wat is Sati Pratha..

Sati Pratha was practiced long back and was started at the time when we had kings and queens.. When a king is being defeted and killed then the queens where subjected to physical and mental torture. To prevent this queens preferred putting themselves to fire with the king.

Also later in the society the life of widow was very diifucult where they were not supposed to use anything which is means of comfort, they were supposed to eat very simple food and live evry simple life. that also supported sati pratha.

But taking away the right f widow to live or her right to ive like anyother human who can eat what he want or live the way he want. That's why all the harsh rules that a widow was supposed to follow are abolished also the rule of sati pratha is abolished..

Men/Women always lean to the side that provides them materialistic gains.. ignoring the long term consequences of those actions. That is exactly what happened int he case of sati.

The word sati only meant a women who burns herself to death.. derived from the name of shiva's wife.. who killed herself in daksha's court. The hindu scriptures give examples of women committing sati after their husband's death, but it was completely her wish.. no one cld force her... like madri- the second wife of pandu committed sati.. where as kunti- his first wife didn't do it. these action were similar to the action of ranja after heer's death.. or that of juliet after romeo's death.
Hindu scriptures gives equal right to property for women.. ie her parent's property. Along with this, a part of whatever her husband earned also belongs to her in case of his death. Now men/woman are always slaves of greed.. why avoid the wealth when the only action u have to do is remove the dead person's wife from ur path? n what a convinient way u have for that... sati. So a deed that used to symbolise love of a woman to her husband that she preferred death than living without him became a curse for her.
It is similar to the way dowry became a curse to the indian society. According to manu smriti, women have equal right to the property. Father's property is equally distribted to the kids. If it is a daughter, 3/4 of it should be given to her when she gets married and the rest 1/4 after her father's death. THe 3/4 part of the inheritence that she got, later on became a dowry.. which was demanded by the groom's family.

Dowry deaths are like forcing her to be a sati while the hubby is still alive

Nice post lakshmi. 😊 Like the new juliet, ranja twist to the sati saga.. hmmm wonder why a married man/woman rarely thinks like ranja or juliet even when the kids are not a concern. 😛
