To be the face of the festival and get publicity for it and themselves. She used to do interviews and walk red carpets everyday while it was going on so people/media realized a festival was happening. Priyanka will do the same.

Seems like she’s making a concerted effort to work in India again. Wonder what else is on the cards?

Then I'd say she failed. The fest had not been getting as much attention as it used to get in 2015-17.

Deepika became the chairperson in 2019 so she only served for one year since the pandemic started after that. Kiran Rao was the chairperson for 4 years before that. Deepika probably quit because there were no red carpets or in-person interviews happening anyway since the pandemic started.

A lot of it depends on what kind of films are releasing around that time so they can have a premiere there. If it's a boring slate, it will naturally get less attention.

Who knows if there will be an in-person festival in 2022 either. There are still travel restrictions in place and most countries won't open travel to India since vaccination rates are still too low there. So not much chance of actors or filmmakers coming from other countries.
