Chapter 4

After managing to get two very drunk doctors into the hospital, sneaking past hospital security and placing them in locker room beds, Bucky and I ran down the fire exit stairs.

‘Doll, I need you to be faster,’ he said. ‘See a 100 year old man is beating you.’

‘Bucky I am only two steps behind you,’ I told him. ‘You aren’t beating me at anything.’

‘Ooh but I could!’ he had the audacity to laugh. ‘Run run my little Hobbit!’

‘I’ll Expelliarmus your ass, Barnes, we’ll see how well you do without your arm!’

‘Exp—what?’

I took advantage of his confusion to run past him, ‘I told you to read Harry Potter but you are still hellbent on reading The Hobbit for the umpteenth time!’

‘What the hell is Expa whatever?’

‘Its a spell in Harry Potter that would disarm you,’ I giggled. ‘How you gonna beat me then?’

At that moment he grabbed me by the waist and trapped me between a wall and his body. He was enjoying watching me struggling to get out of his grip. Slowly, he brought his lips to my ear, ‘Doll, we both know you want something with this arm, and its not disarming it.’

I shivered, turning red as a beet, ‘Don’t flatter yourself Barnes.’

‘Hmmm…’ he hummed, using his metal arm to hitch my leg on his waist, making me gap in surprise. ‘This is just one of the many things you want the arm to do to you, Gauri.’

‘We have to go,’ I tried not to get distracted by the position we were in now. Had I not been completely inexperienced I am sure we would be doing much more than this. ‘Sam’s waiting for us.’

‘B**stard never moves the car seat for me, I think I can let him get pissed off for a while,’ he said into my ear, holding me closer.

Taking in a deep breath I gathered myself, ‘James, we’ll pick this up after the mission, I promise.’

‘Sure promise?’ he was close enough to kiss me now.

I ran my fingers through his hair, ‘Your doll will be all yours then.’

That did it. But of course he was not going to let go off me. Bucky picked me up, making me wrap my legs around his waist. ‘Hold on tight,’ he said excitedly and began to run. I propped my chin on his shoulder, pulling his hair at any chance we got. Soon we were out of the hospital but he was running through the allies, running towards the helicarrier.

‘You’re loving this aren’t you?’ I asked him.

‘Well to be honest, I spent a year trying not to touch you. I was worried that my 1940s lover boy side would put you off.’

‘I know what a Casanova you were back in the day, but you gotta know, I don’t care. I accept all your sides and shades, James.’

‘God I love it when you say my name,’ he sounded elated. ‘And I can’t wait for his mission to get over!’

I laughed at his enthusiasm, feeling his speed slowing down. Sam and Zemo were waiting for us.

‘There you are, I thought you were doing something stupi— aye what the hell you doing?’ Sam looked confused, watching me get off Bucky.

‘This is an interesting turn of events,’ Zemo looked at Bucky and then me, trying to figure out how exactly did this happen.

‘She was slow,’ Bucky replied, ignoring the fact I was shooting daggers at him.

‘I hope thats what it is,’ Sam stared at Bucky as he got onto the helicarrier. ‘I’ll whoop your ass if you hurt her, Buck.’

‘Sam its fine,’ I assured him. We were all on board now, waiting for take off. ‘No one’s getting hurt. And besides,’ I took a seat next to Bucky. ‘Like he said, I was slow.’

‘Very slow,’ the devil flirted back. Ignoring Sam’s glares he held my hand, interlinking our fingers. I waited for the awkwardness to settle but no, Sam and Bucky were on another staring contest. Sam trying to kill Bucky with his gaze while Bucky was doing it only to piss him off.

Finally Sam relented, ‘I need to be drunk for this shit.’ He went towards the pilot’s seat. ‘Imma enter the coordinates now. No funny business you two.’

I clicked my tongue at him but Bucky being Bucky put his face in my hair, smiling as Sam screamed, ‘Has romance ruined your brain? Do you not understand English?’

‘You could speak in Russian and Romanian and I wouldn’t care,’ Bucky said, his face still in my hair. ‘Am I pissing you enough?’

‘More than you think.’

‘Good, you should’ve thought of this when you didn’t move the car seat.’ Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you The Avengers.

‘This is fun…’ I had not noticed Zemo sitting in the corner, enjoying every bit of the show.

‘One year…I waited one year for this day and they start their PDA in front of me,’ Sam muttered. ‘Now I need to pay Rhodey…’

They had a bet? ‘You knew about this?’ I asked Bucky.

He was still very busy nuzzling his face in my hair and neck, ‘No…if I did I’d have made sure Sam pays double…’

‘You’re distracting me,’ I tried to stop him.

‘You’re being too distracting,’ his lips were ghosting all over the right side of my face. ‘You know what I wanna do right now…’

‘Yes I do.’

‘But I won’t. Our first kiss won’t be with Sam watching down our necks.’

‘It would be my first ever.’

‘I know doll, but I like the sound of “ours” than “yours”. And there’s a lot more I’d like to do.’ Dear lord, I had created a loveable monster.

‘By the way,’ Bucky groaned as soon as he heard Sam’s voice. ‘You should know we are going to your city.’

‘Mumbai?’ I moved so fast that Bucky head almost got a jerk. Damn you Sam, you doing this on purpose. Looking at him with apologetic eyes, I moved so that I was tucked in his left side, his metal arm wrapped around me, my forehead against his jaw so that he would still have all the access in the world. That seemed to make him happy. ‘Why Mumbai?’

‘We caught on some unusual activity in South Asia. A lot of the Flag Smashers members were from India’s neighbouring countries and had moved into India after the Blip. So lets be honest, who would want to leave Mumbai and go back to where they came from?’

‘Oh,’ my mind was still reeling over the fact that I was going home.

‘They are planning an attack there, that’s why we took the helicarrier. We should be there in four hours.’

‘They are planning a day-time attack?!’ India was approximately 12 hours ahead of the States.

‘Yeah, more spectators and more damage. We should be reaching there around 2 pm India time.’

‘Are you okay?’ Bucky asked me. I thought he was not listening to a word.

‘Yeah its…its just my parents. Mumbai’s been attacked before but this…this is different. They are Super Soldiers. I am scared this might be the last time ever that I see them.’

‘Miss Gauri…I understand,’ Zemo spoke up. ‘I know the loss one feels when it comes to family. But you need not worry, I have a plan.’

For some weird reason I believed the man. Zemo had lost everything, and the reason were The Avengers. His methods were twisted but I hated the fact that he made sense. Had Tony not created Ultron without telling the others, we would have not been here. Maybe…Steve would still be here, Tony would be alive and Thanos would have died in 2018. But then…I would have never met Bucky. Why does fate work in ironic ways?

‘Sam,’ a voice having an African accent reverbed in the hellicarrier. ‘You have something of ours.’

A huge bump blasted open the door, making us jump to our feet, ready to fight. Four women entered the helicarrier, with murderous looks on their face. The Dora Milaje.

‘Give us the prisoner, James,’ Ayo glared at Bucky, who had shifted me behind him. ‘I cannot believe you would do this to us. Betray us.’

‘I am not betraying you Ayo,’ Bucky said. Sam had managed to shield Zemo. ‘We need this man for to stop an attack that would ruin the world.’

‘The Dora Milaje could have helped you, you only needed to ask.’

‘You and I both know you wouldn’t be able to. We will give him back to you. But there are Super Soldiers like me out there who are terrorising the world. Zemo is the only one who knows about the serum, more than anyone in the world.’

‘You took the man who killed King T’Chakka. Thats enough.’ I watched in horror as Ayo grabbed and dragged Bucky away from me. I tried to reach out and grab him but two other members engaged in a fight with me, the fourth one attacking Sam. We dodged all their blows and attacks, I tactfully tried not to get overpowered.

Suddenly from the corner of my eye I saw Ayo grabbing Bucky’s metal arm, he was frozen in horror, as she made her move to disarm him.

Oh no. Not in front of Zemo!

‘No u don’t!’ I elbowed the two women in their sternum, making them drop in pain. Adrenaline coursing through my veins, I grabbed Ayo’s spear and kicked her in the shin. Before she could steady herself, I was on her shoulder, scissoring her neck. Ayo tried to pull my leg off but I was faster. Placing my left leg on the ground, I locked my right leg around her neck, balancing myself with ease making her struggle. I placed the spear at the spot on her neck where maximum veins were.

‘Don’t you dare,’ I whispered into her ear. ‘All of you!’ I said loudly, watching the Dora Milaje froze. ‘Drop your weapons.’ When they did not comply, I pressed the blade to her neck, ‘I said drop your f**king weapons!’ Scared of the power in my voice and the fact that I could indeed kill their leader, they did as I asked to. The fear was evident on everyone’s face.

‘You are messing with Wakanda…’ Ayo managed to choke out. ‘You do realise our capability.’

‘I come from the land where civilizations existed before Wakanda was even a name. You got help from a freaking meteorite and thats why you think you can scare us? Nuh uh, my country got looted while your ancestors watched from the shadows, making their fancy tech. But you’re forgetting what my ancestors were capable of, and how we built ourselves after numerous attacks,’ I pushed her to the ground, still holding the spear to her head. ‘Ayo, you and I both know what one Brahmastra could do to your country so lets not go there.’

‘I see what you all have resorted to,’ Ayo stared at Bucky, who had no idea what the hell was going on. Never had he seen me so furious.

‘Wakanda cannot be weakened and will fight back.’

‘So fight when the fight is fair,’ I snarled at her. ‘If giving others deliberate weakness is what Wakanda is then rip off some cloth off your armour, near the midriff. Give us a weak point too.’

‘King T’Challa won’t be happy with this. After all we did for you—’

‘I am sure he and Shuri won’t be overly excited to see what you did today; they will hear from me. And stop bringing up the fact that you helped James, your king offered his services. Otherwise James was managing well without you,. And the fact that Bucky did not attack you shows volumes of what he thinks about you. You know what he could’ve done to all of you,’ I told her, shaking in anger. ‘Your prisoner will be brought back to you within 48 hours. Now get out of here before I actually do something that causes a war to start between Wakanda and us.’

Ayo and the other members of the Dora Milaje got up slowly, I handed her weapon back to her. She opened the door, ready to jump out, ‘Bast damn you, James.’

‘Har Har Mahadev…’ I said to Ayo, noticing her eyes widen. Fear again; so easy for her to forget where I came from, to forget the fact who my forefathers were, what India was. The door shut after they left.

‘The arm…it comes off…’ Zemo looked deep in thought.

‘No, it can only be paralysed for 30 seconds.’

‘Why do you lie?’

‘I have studied the arm for a year, Zemo. I know how it works,’ Sam made Zemo sit and looked at us. For the first time, I saw concern and sadness on his face.

I turned to Bucky, who was looking at the ground, pain evident in his eyes. I began to cry and threw my arms around him. ‘Its okay, I am here,’ I whispered.

‘I am going to hell,’ he murmured into my shoulders, making my heart ache.

‘No you are not, James,’ I rubbed his back. ‘You know thats not how it works.’

He chuckled humourlessly, ‘How do you know that?’

‘Because whatever you do, you attempt to fix it right here. Its called Prayaschit. And you are doing that James, you have made such great amends. Hasn’t he, Sam?’ I wiped my tears, waiting for my friend to respond.

‘Of course. You are doing so well, man,’ he smiled at Bucky. ‘And Gauri knows what she is talking.’

I smiled through the tears, ‘You know what, I’ll get someone more experienced to explain it to you.’

Bucky returned my smile, hugging me back. ‘I didn’t know you were capable of such an attack.’

‘No one hurts my man,’ I told him truthfully.

He looked at me in disbelief, ‘I am?’

‘You are, darling,’ I told him, looking at the surge of emotions on his face. ‘You are my man and will always be my man.’

Bucky was at a loss for words, so he did the one thing he could do. Hold me tightly to him and carry me to the seats, setting me on his lap. I continued to comfort him, running my left fingers on his face. He held my right hand and placed kisses on the palm, making me cry more.

We were in our own bubble, holding each other for the next couple of hours, before the next battle.

No matter what would happen, we would be together. Through the upps and downs, the happy days and bad days. He had the ghosts of his past turning up unexpected everywhere, but I was here for him. Only for him. For all of him.

I fell for you unexpectedly, James Buchanan Barnes, but I vow I’ll be with you beyond the end of time.

I love Sam and Zemo shipping them and Sam being done with his life🤣

Also, loved the fight and the lift (☺️) scene I had to reread the lift becuase my head went full wrong direction🤣
