This is a gut wrenching comparison

Both are two of my all time favorite movies and two of the finest movies to come out of Bollywood.

Lagaan for me has more repeat value because it is a lot more commercial with the patriotic setup, the highs of a successful underdog story and ample amounts of dramatic moments.

Swades is a lot plainer and realistically handled, but is definitely more thought provoking. It doesn't shy from making the user uncomfortable about their lives and that is not every viewer's cup of tea.

Casting and performances in both movies are brilliant. The supporting cast is excellent - from Smith and Kachra in Lagaan to Mela Ram and Kaveri Amma in Swades

Music I prefer Swades over Lagaan.

If I want to watch a movie from the middle, I would pick Lagaan. If I am in a retrospective mood and want some food for though, I would go with Swades

They both are good films.

Lagaan is the more commercial film. It hooks you in right away and sweeps you away in the story. It is a complete entertainer that has repeat value.

Swades is more like a slow burn. It is not easy to get into or get through. It's an uncomfortable film that cannot be watched over and over again.

On the whole, Swades is a superior movie. It doesn't gloss over the poverty and injustices in India. At the same time, it doesn't allow people to look down on India either. Narratively too, Swades is better. It zooms in on the character of Mohan and shows his character growth. Lagaan's ensemble doesn't have room for such deep character development. SRK too gives one of his best performances. When I see Swades - I wonder why SRK made crap like Zero, Happy New Year, or Dilwale.

This is not to take anything away from Lagaan which is far superior to your average Bollywood movie. Swades just edges out ahead.

Lagaan is more entertaining, has more repeat value.

Swades has more heart. Plus SRK in Swades was just something else. I hate how this movie isn't known to alot of people. Wish it came out some time now.

Lagaan is a classic film, it is like a lesson in film-making, a nearly perfect film despite having Aamir Khan in it.

In 2000's It was quite easy to make a film like Swades but it needed a lot of heart to make a film like Lagaan.
