PART 170
Ram gulped as he waited backstage, waiting for the press and media to arrange themselves in the chairs of the massive auditorium.
“I could have never thought people would be this interested in every make-believe story they hear.” Shatrughan said looking through the glass door at the packed hall.
“Sometimes I feel Bhaiyya, not matter whatever good you do, nothing ever comes back to you. We work with so many charities, organizations, but never were we once covered like this. But today, when someone raised a finger at us, look how they’ve come to torment us further.” Bharat shrugged his thoughts away as Pawan walked up to escort them to stage.
“Ready, sir?”
Ram held the paper in his hands tightly. Every ounce of him wrenched and trembled, but he knew, this was last resort for him to ensure that his child wasn’t brought up in a world that’d call their mother names.
“As ready as Ill ever be,” he said.
-------------------------
The blinding flashes hurt them as Rams eyes tried to find any place without a camera but failed to do so. They were in the absolute centrestage.
“We request you all to maintain a decorum and be respectful. Questions will only be entertained once Mr. Ram Suryavanshi is done speaking. Thank you.”
Ram cleared his throat as he stood up to walk to the podium.
“Bhaiyya, are you sure?” Lakshman asked.
“Yes, Laksh. Don’t worry, it will be fine.”
Ram stood quiet for a few seconds, his mind recalling all the events that had taken place over the last few days.
“Today,” he began, “I have called this conference with a very pure and important intention. The articles, headlines and billboards that are carrying our names today, affect not only the minds of the general public, but also us, as a family. And it is high time both the media and world realise the same.”
“We, as a family are deeply shocked by the kind of unsympatheic treatment of the women of our family and the ideas that are held of women of our society in general. After having done so much for the nation and its people, is that what we truly deserve?”
Murmers and whispers became louder in the audience.
“I have said this again and again, but I will sum it up in one sentence. Yes, we visited Vatika because my and my brothers wife, both respectable women were taken there as a criminal act by Raghavan. However, even with his monstrosity, he never dared to touch my wife or my sister in law. But the kind of stories you have made up, it hurts me to say that you have lost respect in my ideas as a pillar of democracy.”
Ram stopped, taking a minute to compose himself, as he picked up the paper from the podium.
“Here, this is what you all wanted. All the proof you could ever ask for. You all raise fingers at my wife against her chastity right?!” His voice trembled as he spoke the words.
“Then take this, my wifes medical report. See it and tell me if you find anything questionable. I hope that answers all of your questions.”
Ram pushed the paper into the hands of one of the executives, as he walked off stage, his brothers following behind leaving a pin drop silence, as all eyes fell on that single sheet.
And Ram was thankful for the distraction, away from the tears that ran down his cheek.
------------------------------------------------------
“Sir, can you arrange it sooner?”
“But dear, are you really sure? Moving in so soon? He will need you my child, he will be devastated if you leave.”
Siya fidgeted with her fingers, holding back a tear as the television ran muted I front of her.
“He will be Sir, I know. But what is happening here is worse. It is not good for either him or my child. I need to go away, and then everything will die down.”
“If that’s what you feel dear,” the voice said from the other side. “I still need a week or two.”
“Yes, sure. I will manage till then. Thank you once again Sir.”
“Whatever keeps you happy, my child.”
Siya kept the phone down, switching the TV off. The world too suddenly seemed to die down, only the occasional chirp of a bird or a car passing by. The only sounds she could hear was the beating of her heart and soft, unmistakable footsteps approaching.
She turned to see Rams tired face, pushing a small smile at her. Siya propped herself against the headrest as Ram sat next to her, gazing at her intently.
So many words, apologies and promises were made silently.
In the dark of the night, Ram bent and placed his head in her lap, as Siya ran her fingers through his curls. For the first time in the whole day, Ram felt as if he’d come home.
--------------------------------------------
Lakshman hung his coat softly, turning to look at Urmila who slept with her laptop half open.
He walked over and put the laptop away, about to pull the blanker over her when, she woke up.
“Oh youre here, Im so sorry, I was awake, don’t know how I fell asleep… I usually never feel so sleepy but today I just..”
“Hey, Mila, its alright.”
He moved closer to her as she rested her head on his shoulder.
“I don’t know what will happen now Mila, Bhaiyya has given the report in public hands now. Its all upto them now. We have done everything we could.”
Urmila nodded as she closed her eyes again.
“If you hadn’t been this strong Lakshman, I would’ve lost my sanity long ago. Thank you for being there.”
“Don’t thank me Mila,” he said softly. “Thank yourself. We can only get through this we are together.”
They sat a few moments in silence, as Lakshman switched off the lights.
“And get yourself checked tomorrow Mila, if youre feeling unwell. I don’t know if Ill be able to come with you, but do get yourself checked.”
She smiled, waiting for another night to pass in anticipation.
------------------------------------------------
“I think the media is really troubling them.”
“They seem like nice people.”
“Its all money, they can fake anything.”
The variety of headlines that met Siya every morning had become so common, she could know what theyd write even without going through them.
A week at hand was all she had. A few things to pack, a few lies to tell.. But she still had one gap to fill. She had to trust someone, with all that she would leave behind. Someone who would know everything yet not stop her, because she knew she was away from being stopped. But who would it be?
“Siya, are you alright?”
Siya jerked up on the couch as Ram held her hand. All those at the dinner table looked at her with worry.
“Yes, sorry. I just, zoned out.”
She smiled as they continued, Ram still staring at her as he whispered.
“Siya, I know I haven’t been able to give you a lot of time lately, are you angry with me by any chance? Im sorry I..”
“No, Ram, why would you think that? Its just that I.. I feel I need a change with everything. Do you mind if I.. I go and stay at Agartala for a while?”
Ram’s face fell down for a moment, but he quickly regained himself and smiled.
“Sure, if that is what makes you feel better. I should have suggested that anyway, but with everything I think it crossed my mind. I will take out some time and take you with me.”
“But theres no need Ram, I can go alone.”
“No Siya, I am sure I can take out a day..”
“Ram, please. Im sure I can go. Infact I want to do this journey myself, I want to see if Im fit enough. The doctor told me to do some activities on my own right, and its just a small flight.”
“Siya, you can ask Dad..”
“No Ram, hes already not fully fit himself. And plus, I sort of want to keep this a surprise.”
“Oh, I see,” Ram said reluctantly, yet he knew that her wish now was In her best interest.
Still, something kept on tugging away at his heart. Every once of him said,
Don’t, don’t let her go.
---------------------------------------
“Di, Bhaiyya just said youre going to Agartala, alone? Are you sure?” Urmila asked tensed, as all the sisters sat around Siya in her room.
“Yes Mila, Im sure. Don’t worry, and don’t tell Maa and Dad about this.”
“I wish I could come with you Di,” Maanvi said. “ But the doctor has strictly asked me against any movement, else I too would’ve loed to visit home once, away from all this.”
“Yes, dear.” Was all that Siya could reply.
“Bhabi is Mila..?” Lakshman peeped though the door to find all sisters gathered.
“Yes Laksh,” Siya replied. “We all were just talking. Is it anything urgent?”
“No Bhabi, its alright,” he replied. “I was just worried, I couldn’t find her anywhere so..”
Everyone smiled at his antics as Laksh left with a small tinge.
“Hes lost without you Mila,” Maanvi teased to brighten the room.
“Oh come on,” Urmila blushed. “Nothing like that. If it would have been anyone else too hed go around searching like this. He loves being around everyone, he cant stand a moment alone.”
Siya nodded, knowingly, as if she had found an answer to a question of hers.
“Okay, I think you all should take rest now. And don’t worry about me, Ill be fine.”
They wished each other goodbye, as they left one by one.
“Goodnight Di,” Mila said, closing the door behind her.
“Mila, wait.”
“Yes Di?” She asked surprised.
“If hes awake, can you please send Lakshman here once, I want to talk to him about something. Without Ram.”
“Oh,” she said pausing. “Yes Sure Di, one minute.”
“Im sure its nothing Mila, maybe she needs help with something and doesn’t want to disturb Bhaiyya.”
----------------------------------------------------------
“But she ONLY called you, not me or Bhaiyya. The last time she did this, she hid Raghavan from us.”
Mila looked him in the eyes.
“Promise me Lakshman, whatever she tells you now, you will come and tell me. I cant let anything slip away, again.”
Lakshman nodded, smiling as he walked to Siyas room.
“Bhabi, is everything okay?”
Lakshman saw her face, and a deep chord struck his heart. He knew that face all too well, as his heart beat faster.
“Sit here Lakshman, and promise me, whatever I tell you, will stay between the two of us.”
