I've not sorted out 70s ones, just penned down the classics that came to mind.

As folks mentioned:

  • Any Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie. Except Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kate. :)
  • Rajesh Khanna early socio dramas. E.g. Bawarchi, Anand
  • Amol Palekar movies (Recommend ChitChor, GolMaal (Old), Chhoti Si Baat)
  • Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (Black Comedy, not very uplifting though, so skip if you're grumpy)
  • Chashme Buddoor (Old) {Random Rant: Why the f&&& Farah Khan thinks she's a pioneer female director. Sai Paranjpaye directed this, and Farah can't direct a movie that comes any close)
  • Chameli Ki Shaadi (after this movie I actually started watching older Bollywood movies)
  • Angoor (I consider this, Chupke Chupke & Gol Maal (Old) as the best comedies in Bollywood)

Angrezi mein bolenga toh:

  • The Sting (my fav Hollywood movie)
  • The Graduate
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's
  • Roman Holiday
  • Indiana Jones series (one way street, no turning back once you're hooked, beware!)
  • Brief Encounter (British)
  • Double Indemnity (not feel good, beware, but good repeat value)
  • Chinatown (see how botched up Manorama Six Feet Under is comparatively)
  • Citizen Kane (first classic I watched, transfixed, on DD Metro, realized years later that it was a classic)
  • The Wizard of Oz (timeless, family watch)

I tried watching Citizen Kane and got bored after 30 minutes. I don't know if I should continue or not but I still got a copy of it from my old laptop. 😒
