China's one child policy

Most of us are aware of China's extreme measure to control its population by introducing its one child policy in 1979. The policy aimed to help alleviate the growing population, social and enviromental problems of China.

The Government boasts of increased savings rate........that is people now have more money to invest. There is also an increased involvement of women in the labor force. In a place where women were traditionally the primary caregivers for children, the women have more time and energy to focus on their careers, which in turn benefits both them and China.

However, ever since it has been implemented the policy has raised critics both within and outside China. Many claim that it violates basic human rights and voice concerns about negative economic and social consequences.

Please share your views and thoughts on this.

Are you for or against such a policy being implemented in India?

Was this the right move for the chinese goverment at that time?

Should these type of policies be allowed?

Overall, did this benefit or hinder China?

Am not getting the post where we debated this issue, nevermind.

May be this is the main reason half of china is moved to different countries... seeing the average death rate and growth in population, how else can China Govt have any kind of restriction?

Hypothetically it seems like a good idea. There is a population crisis that needs to be addressed. Forcing birth control is a choice to make. However, the logistics employed were all wrong. The result is female infanticide, lower status of women, abandoned/orphaned children and a skewed population that negatively effects society and economy.

We've gone through this policy in our Geography lessons at school... ok there is a reason as to why the policy has been put up but I think everyone has a right to choose how many kids they want... it's not nice forcing a mother to have an obortion if she's conceived with a second child... and there are poor babies who aren't at any fault who are left on the strets and people just walk pass them without any concern...

it may work for them but it is a grave violation of human rights. but then when did communist ever worry about human rights!!!

i don't want any such policy to be forced upon people in a democratic country. only long term solution is to work towards educating the masses about the benefits of family planning. this is hard to achieve but is the only just and fair solution that comes to mind.

another measure that comes to mind is not a fair but wld not take a long time like the education one. it definitely is better than slapping a one child policy on people. developing nations, like india, where over population is a major problem shd think about giving some incentives to people who have only 2 kids or less. incentives like some tax breaks or education credits etc. and take certain incentives away if they choose to go for more than two children. that way, people will still get to choose whether they want more children or not.

don't really know what else to put here 😕

I don't think it is a violation of human rights, they are not stopping people from enjoying their sexual life..ab desh ke liye thodi qurbani to deni padegi. 😆

Infact if everything fails then I would like our govt to implement something similar lekin mujhe pata hai ki yahaan implementation kaise hota hai. Population sabse badi problem hai mere khyaal se.

I think it's a good policy to have in case of emergency situations. In both India and China the conditions were going out of their reach, so China was forced to do it. India didn't but then India also didn't manage to have a better alternative in it's place. In this scenario I'll say China's policy was better than India's. If people are not willing to act responsibly then whipping remains the only way out, human rights takes the back seat at those times.
