Why are BW and ITV moving in opposite directions?

I'm sorry to bring in ITV here, but I've always had this doubt. Recently, there has been a shift in audience's tastes and mainly good movies perform well at the box office. Crap is being rejected. On the other hand, looking at the latest TRPs of ITV shows, only crap and regressive content are doing well. So why is there this disparity? Any ideas? Can anything be done to bridge this disparity?

crappy and regressive shows have been doing well since kekta brought a flood of nonsensical shows like kyunki, kalash, kahani and so on...

the era of bold shows that was started by zee tv and sony tv - like banegi apni baat, tara, jaane kahan mera jigar gaya ji...ended there itself.

channel v tried to bring some good shows like paanch, confessions, gumrah, relationship status o gujaruya but indian audiences had turned regressive by now. so the channel was scrapped.

that's why digital has been launched for people looking for variety but then again there r too many shows and u cant watch them for free either.

this is indeed sad state of affairs..but we can do hardly anything abt it... 🤷‍♀️

I completely agree, but I still wonder why. The audience that is rejecting crap movies is not rejecting crap serials at all. Why this double standards? And even for digital shows, not all are great. Only a few are. Most of them just revolve around sex and vulgarities as if there is nothing else to show. I have nothing against portraying sex and vulgarities in webseries but the Indian digital space shouldn't be dominated by them.

Does it really? While I agree that ITV shows seem to be catered more towards Indian housewives, there is almost a 20 year gap between the rise of Ekta's saas-bahu dramas and now. 20 years meaning a bigger youth population that complains about crap ITV content on social networking sites. Why don't we see more of the influence of this youth population on TRPs- ie. rejecting bad shows and accepting good shows? Especially since TRPs are based on urban areas.

I think regressive TV soaps r dying..I hardly know anyone who is n avid soap watcher unlike earlier days..At our home the only daily shows we watch r on sab tv.

Agree on web series..Watched 4 more shots pls..And felt that sex was deliberately put in just for the sake of it..There was no connection with the story and no need of it at all.

I don't understand how Kumkum Bhagya and Kundali Bhagya even get any TRPs let alone be in Top 10 after having barely progressing storylines. Utterly crappy shows they are 🤔.

It's really nice to hear that some households are shifting to better channels and serials. But I just have to disagree on the point that regressive TV soaps are dying. Regressive TV soaps are easily getting 3+ trps while good progressive ones struggle to cross even 2+. And the ones that do, have to include lots of melodrama to reach there. Sony TV serials barely cross 1+ despite providing the most variety and good quality serials now.

And your point about sex being deliberately included is totally valid. Many webseries are ruined by this emphasis on sex when it's totally unnecessary and disrupts the flow of the storyline.
