Everyone is assuming that audience is shifting because Khan movies are tanking and these movies are tanking because they are not able to collect 500cr, Salman's last Eid release, a flop collected 200 crore but was a flop because it was a Salman movie.
Uri was based on surgical strike, BJP got 303 seats for this, it had to do well, but Uri with Salman would have been a hit with because it didn't cross 300cr.
Budget to collection ratio is deciding fate of movies but not the audience, there is a decline in movie watchers, we can watch everything on phone now.
It's not only that Khan movies flopping. Khan movies are given more attention as they star big heroes and it's a big deal if their movies don't perform well. Most don't believe that the audience is shifting because their movies aren't performing well, but based on the fact that good movies are performing well (despite the lack of star power). Previously, box office power by hero played a big role in determing the fate of a movie.
I believe you're talking about Bharat. From what I heard (haven't watched it yet), that it's a decent movie but not the best. If you look at his other movies like Tubelight and Race 3, it should have easily crossed 300cr with his star power. It just goes to show that star power can longer cover bad scripts.
Leaving that aside, Uri did well. But to reach almost 300cr in India with Vicky Kaushal who is still developing is something phenomenal. Badhaai Ho crossed 100cr in India with Ayushmann as the lead and a different and almost taboo concept. While I agree budget to collection ration decides the fate of movies (and serve as a reminder for film makers to not inflate their budget unnecessarily), 100cr, 200cr etc are also used as benchmarks to gauge a movie's success. And for actors with little box office power to achieve these benchmarks just goes to show that script can outweigh starpower. If the audience had not been receptive, these movies would have never made the kind of money it did with smaller stars. Because the kind of movies that made this kind of money previously belonged to bigger stars and most of them didn't have such different and good concepts.
And I don't think it's true that there's a decline in movie watchers. While everything can be watched on phone, it takes times for new movies to be released on apps. BW is making more revenue these past few years. Some movies have even made more than 400cr. Higher ticket prices can't solely account for the higher revenue. The audience no. has to be constant at least for revenues to increase.
